New M5 to have engine sounds played in the cabin

May be there is a option to choose engine noises from other cars too? Why stop there with just 1?

Silly idea is silly idea!

And how much does this 'sound enhancement' system cost?

....

Both of those two explanations are equally as valid as artificially recreating the sound of the engine in a vehicle that already contains and actual engine making those sounds.

It's built into the entertainment system, assuming it is HARMAN's HALOsonic system like I suspect, so it shouldn't cost anything more. Although it may only be included in the high-end stereos, I'm not sure....

I think people are over-reacting here, its not replacing the noise at all, in fact most will still come from the engine / drive-train, its just adding back in some of the sounds that are muted by the turbos and other sound-deadening

Therefore it's the turbos you should be up in arms about :p

lol

I still think that if you said to the engineers at BMW - "You guys have more time/money/engineering than sense"
They'd reply "Who is 'sense'?"
:p

I'm holding judgement at the moment. At first i was like OMGWTFBBQ but after thinking about it - BMW wouldn't put anything that wasn't very very good on their most famous car now would they?

It does all somewhat remind me of the old adage about the space pen that the American's designed to work in a zero mavity environment ...while the Russians just used a pencil.

Makes perfect sense to me. If this is done right you'd be very hard pushed to tell and it'll enhance the driving experience. I'm not sure why people are so hung up on the 'real' sound. Every engine has a myriad of sound-modifying devices all over it. The suspension isn't 'real' but electronically enhanced, same for the brakes, same for the steering, same for the seats etc. I don't see the problem with enhancing the sound as well.

You ever used an equaliser setting other than totally neutral? OMG YOU ARE RUINING THE PURE SOUND

Actually I am a flat earth kind of chap, so no I never use equaliser settings, indeed none of my hi-fi equipment has any anyway.

Reckon they should add a jet engine noise option and also change the windscreen to leave light trails so you can travel round everywhere at hyperspeed.

Chances are the production team did a pretty huge amount of equalisation work to make it sound better, rather than to sound real.

I imagine they did yes.

But we always have this on OcUK and in society at large, the group who is in favour of the new strange ideas and those who are not. I reserve true judgement, I'll see how it actually turns out ...but, I still, at this point in time fail to see the point of it. Sounds like a waste of time and money to me.

But it's a step too far

Electronically assisted steering is the norm, but where do you draw the line, having the car steer for you and disconnect the steering so you think you're driving like Schumacher but instead you're actually nothing to do with it ?

There's enhancing something, like the modifications made to the exhaust system, the intake etc.. To make it sound better, and therm there's replacing it with something fake.

Are they completely muting the engine? 'Cause if not, they aren't replacing it with something fake, they are enhancing it. Just like they enhance the steering, suspension etc. with mechanical or digital aids.

BMW have been enhancing exhaust notes in one way or another for years. Even my MY2001 330i had an acoustically controlled exhaust. Now they are enhancing it digitally. In reality it's a great idea; 99% of the effect, but light-weight and low-cost.

All cars are going to be awful within the next 15 years.

I remember when I was growing up always being fascinated by cars. I was born in 1983 and throughout the 90s worried that by the time I would be old enough to drive in 2000/2001 that all cars would be horrible electric things.

Luckily I was quite wrong and I've since owned an e39 M5 and now own an e60 M5. Hopefully the internal combustion engine will continue to be prominent for many years yet even if the mainstream and "car as a tool" end of the market look to alternatives.

As you can tell by my car choice, I'm quite happy to stick two fingers up at all the tree hugging lefties that may bemoan my CO2 emissions or fuel consumption.
