Terra Nova

I actually enjoyed it as there is nothing better to watch on at the moment so it fills a hole....

They went back for a better life and climate etc don't they realise in 20 million years they're all going to be wiped out by a meteor strike?

which still gives them potentially more time than we have on this planet, depending on what mistakes they make of course.

how long til we find out the sixers are really the good guys? please don't let it be that predictable heh. overall i enjoyed it, the 2 hours went by quickly so that's a good sign :)
sooo much better start than castouts.

My brain had turned off a bit by the end of the 2nd episode but the way the balck woman from the sixers were talking almost seemed like they were there at the boss mans behest. Although I may have misinterpreted a turn of phrase.

Its pretty much awful, so far these are the kinds of stories I'd expect to see in, filler eps in season 7-8 of Stargate, they are WOEFUL opening episodes, generic stories, maybe 2 good actors in the lot of them(the woman who was in Kings, well worth watching, great cast, religious which I hate usually but in a VERY different way to normal) and the guy from Avatar is actually more than fine in this, I assumed from Avatar that he was just a crap actor, but it was more of an awful role/dialogue in Avatar than him.

I actually think a Stargate Universe type opening would have worked much better, with FAR more explanation in the "real world" and far more arriving in a new place bewilderment.

Based on the absolutely woeful generic feel of the episodes, the incredibly generic characters and the entirely predictable nature of each character, I can barely muster up the enthusiasm to fell anything about the show, "meh" is about as enthusiastic I can be about it.

Fallen skies had many of the same problems but a vastly stronger cast, better acting, yet also a quite unexplained and weak opening.

The new tv this year really has been a joke. :(

Plot holes I could drive a fleet of supertankers through, acting and dialogue by Early Learning Centre, vehicles by Tonka and assault rifles with the mags on top, oh really, I'll aim by peering around it then, very 22nd century.

JP meets Time Tunnel meets Lost meets Predator/Aliens*

But, we'll all be back next week for Ep3 I expect!

It is fairly immersion breaking to have this tiny colony in the past where new arrivals are moved into Habitat show homes. They live a lifestyle that you would expect requires immense industrialisation to achieve but manage it without industrialisation. I saw the first episode expecting them to be stuck in massive dehumanising dorms upon arrival. Instead its stick your feet up and don't get mud on the leather settee.

Instead of focussing on the basic premise we have to insert the conspiracy early on. All TV producers these days need to blow their load in the first few episodes instead of letting things simmer and then build up.
Imagine I lived in the African savannah I would know not to go out alone unarmed. But kids living in a significantly more dangerous place go swimming and have picnics outside 30 foot high defensive fence. Who is that stupid?

Too many plot elements contrived and stuffed in to early. Poor basic premise I do not think this will be good.

Stargate Universe on the other hand is the anti Terra Nova. I never liked SG1 but SGU is gripping and generally obeys its own internal logic. Too many sci-fi shows can't manage that from episode to episode these days and the correlation is theones that cant generally are the ones that suck.

The majority of the Falling Skies characters were just as predictable, even more so in some cases. It's funny to see how similar they are.

Gruff military leader that doesn't have time for intelligent reasoning - check
Dad character trying to keep the family together - check
Wife/Love interest that happens to be a Doctor - check
Awful and cringeworthy teenage son -check
Awkward teenage girl character -check
Love interest for the teenage son character, who happens to have had a rough past - check.

The list seems to be endless :p

It would be nice to have some less stereotypical characters for once.

If Taylor turns out to be a good guy with some brains, i will be genuinely surprised.

Falling Skies was ok, again, nothing special but it did have the impossibly lovely Sarah Carter in it

Sigh.

There are a fair few similarities there. :D The only part I'd disagree with is the first point, at least Terra Nova's dude appears to be able to listen to reason and come to sensible conclusions. The rest is spot on.

Just saw the first two episodes and cannot believe how similar this show is to falling skies. Why are the new generation of sci-fi shows so family orientated?

The cringe factor doesn't seem to be as bad as falling skies, and the actors seem to be more of a higher quality but I really can't see this show running for more than two seasons. It seems to be going in way too many directions and I agree with other posters that too many elements were presented in just two episodes.

Argh why can't any of these suits recognise why shows like BSG are so successfull? And they can V after such a strong end to the second season, man go figure.

Same with T:TSCC, canned after s2 when it became excellent.
Anyway, nerdy math daughter going to be taken to equations and seeks to solve puzzle going forward me thinks.
Dark underplot to be revealed and not so dark me thinks.

Watched up to esp 3 now and it's the same old crap we have seen before

- bad acting
- overprotective father and mother
- son who likes to get into trouble (the boy from V springs to mind here)
- a little love story
- a dark side to the whole story

What would I give for Firefly to be around, and to have been made with a real budget and a real time slot so people actually saw it. How on earth is it that Whedon, after the ridiculous amount of success he'd had, saw Firefly canned so easily and with so little support.

This stuff is so weak its a joke, I didn't want to talk specifics too much before as people wouldn't all have seen it but they've had their chance :p

Basically establishing how "bad" Earth was that they had to move on was laughably poor, one scene, he walks in and has to take off a rebreather, jail, and they leave, its truly awful. THere was no sense of how hard life was for anyone else, poor people, how the world was dying etc, then getting across was ridiculously easy........ the worlds dying, everyone would want off, but they are the only family who tried to sneak someone over with a bribe, seriously?

Across to the other side, kids do something stupid and get into trouble, as I said thats a seriously "filler" type episode, not an establishing the show type episode. The characters had a normal life on "bad" earth, walked across, and got a bigger place to live, green air, and act like everythings back to normal.

They haven't really established the technology level earth was at, or what they have on the new earth, do they have replicators and managed to take across the parts to build one over there? why wasn't everyone going over carrying a bit more than a small freaking backpack, hey, two people carry a sofa, two other guys a huge crate of food, or ammo, its retarded. no, a little bag, and their attempt to check the bag, and the video never catches them switching the bag over with a kid in it.

Just about every single thing you put any thought into, was epically ridiculous.

Sneaking out under the fence was especially strange, seeing as the front gate is open and apparently loads of people are off doing various things anyway.

Falling skies is meh, but almost watchable, this is really pretty awful.
