How often do you change your car oil?

Every 5k/6 months I change the oil, oil filter and air filter.
Ever year/10k I change the brake fluid, plugs etc...

I don't suppose there is the need to change as regularly but, my engine and turbo have never had any problems and it gives me something to do on Sunday afternoons :D

lots of good reading, especially the e39 M5s and their rod bearings

i cant find the page i read years ago where a group of guys had sent in oil for analysis at 2k mile intervals (ie 2k, 4k, 6k) and repeated it with different viscosities

basically, on average, the oil wasnt much good after 7.5k

I can't see any testing which shows how the engine oil degrades over time, let alone any testing which states that after 7k it needs changing.

Please could you post a direct link with concise answers / facts.

I would like a test which shows the same oil (oil x) had values XYZ at millage A B C.

Edit: furthermore those guys are banging on about the viscosity of the oil changing slightly or more particulate and contamination building up, clearly this is going to change over time and usage of the oil, but these data points are irrelevant unless you know the start of life and end of life operating parameters which the oil company has designed the oil to work effectively within.

Since they don’t seem to have this data either what these people seem to be doing is akin to ******* into the wind.

Since the internet, everyone now knows best. It doesn't matter whether its oil grades, foreign policy or what, 'they' are wrong or lying to you and you, armed with google and forums know best.

Collective you used there, don't mean you Simon :p

When those little Green lights have gone out. But before the Red one comes on!

And I don't mean Traffic lights you Muppets! :p

What!

You must love sitting up in sky high RPMs or only do 3k a year.

Wouldn't say there is a need unless tracking or leaving the car sitting around for a long time, Honda's 6k recommendation is fine and will save you ~£40-50 in comparison.

I do a lot of short journeys, and this equates to 2-3 a year

As has already been said, nothing there backs up what you've said.

In fact most of the articles from the google search say that after 7k or so miles, the oil is still in pretty much the predicted condition, with a standard amount of time left.

If I had the money and spare time I would love to do mine every 7k. But that might mean changing the oil 3-4 times a year for me.....
