Long story short.....
The old android market (green and white) ran awesomely and took up very little space on my phone (Desire)
The new android market (grey) keeps crashing runs sluggish, only works through VPN and takes up about 10 times as much space.

Is there a way to stop it from constantly trying to upgrade itself on a non-rooted phone ?

Apart from the annoyance of having to go into my settings and uninstall the new market and flash 11 each time I want to use the market, it's also updating itself when I'm out and about and its eating into my data allowance :(

I tried deleting the market updater.apk but I don't have the permissions, all I can do is force stop it and then stay well away from the market and hope for the best.

As I say, I need a permanent solution for a non-rooted phone..... I hope there is one !!

Cheers

You touched on it already, you need to delete the maket updater apk, but you need to be rooted to do that (as the /system partition is mounted read-only by default), so without rooting I doubt you'll have much luck...

Simple solution, root and delete...

Might be worth clearing the data/cache from the market if it's *really* slow, I had that and after clearing it it's nice and quick (although does occasionally slip back into being slow...)

I'm back on the older (green and white) market too, while I like the newer look it was just too slow.

Get it rooted!!

I have no idea how the most recent variant passed QA, it's appallingly designed and slow on nearly every device. If i could be arsed I'd go back to the early 2011 one as this one is just balls.

Mine always comes up asking me to update and i always click no, once I clicked yes, it updated, took 7 megabytes which, on my unrooted desire, is too much.

I uninstalled it and just keep clicking no.

What's the kang part? :p

You can just uninstall updates then delete MarketUpdater.apk, as the new market was just an update, it didn't change the original market that was on the device :).
