Tyre prices

Thanks for the effort - really appreciated - but thats £10 more than Camskill, unless its a fitted price :(

I don't understand, so Camskill have bought the tyre from the supplier, put their profit margin on top and it's still cheaper than others can get from the supplier? How do they do this? Is it buying power?

And does anyone else find the pricing structures bizarre? A 235/45/17 AS2 is £105, yet a 265/35/18 AS2 is £100 more expensive. Is there really twice as much rubber in the slightly larger tyre?

Not much more rubber but more steel/composite reinforcement for the silly little sidewalls to be able to take the punishment of potholed roads without frequent failures. This is why they are heavier compared to higher profile tyres.

Obviously volume of sales will be another factor; a tyre moulding machine making tyres that sell in relatively low volume isn't going to be making the turnover that high volume, popular fitments would, so the low volume ones get marked up.

However, I can't help thinking that the price differential isn't solely down to manufacturing costs; I wouldn't be at all surprised if the tyres aren't somewhat priced according to market; i.e. cars requiring 18" and 19" tyres tend to be higher spec models which cost more to buy, so the market can bear a higher price.

When I first started buying them the 18's (Optional E39 Sport wheel) were not that much more expensive than the 17's (Standard E39 Sport wheel). At the time the 18 inch size was quite rare shared with only a handful of other cars such as the 911 C4S.

Now, it's a more popular size than its ever been - it is the standard tyre size for current gen E Class BlueEfficiency Mercs on 18 inch wheels... and the price difference between the 17 inch wheel and 18 inch wheel is far bigger than its ever been.

Even with rising prices I'd expect the percentage difference between the two to have remained similar..

Know what you mean...bought two 175/65/14's for swmbo's car last week, Think they cost me just over £20 more than the (same) two i bought about 18 months ago...bloody bonkers!!!
:o

I find that common fittings are significantly cheaper, my wheels are 215/55/16 but the slightly wider ones I can have, I think is 225 (i think) are significantly more expensive, and more prone to aquaplane, although they do probably grip marginally better in the dry.

That's why I've never bought from camskill, because when you factor in delivery, fitting, and disposal, I've not found it to be competitive, compared to some of the one stop internet shops where you order and then select a local garage.

There is no purpose to this thread other than a mini-rant. Deep down I am fully versed in the workings of supply and demand but that doesnt stop me fancying a damn good whinge.

Is it me or have tyre prices gone bonkers lately? I can't find tyres for under £200 fitted, a few years back I was paying £160 fitted for the same tyres :(

And does anyone else find the pricing structures bizarre? A 235/45/17 AS2 is £105, yet a 265/35/18 AS2 is £100 more expensive. Is there really twice as much rubber in the slightly larger tyre?

Grrrrr.

Completely agree with you - tyre prices have gotten very high and the "disposal fee" that some places charge annoys me no end.

Combined with slightly tighter finances this year, I have switched to a mid-brand tyre when I changed the fronts a few weeks ago.

While on this rant, I hate paying £300+ for a decent pair of tyres to be fitted, only to find my alloys covered in grime - they could at least wipe them down!

tyre prices here have stayed roughly the same for me, but fitting charge has gone from £15 to £25 (a rise of £40!) ... hmm :(

Camskill prices are very good, I know the boys at the local quick fit and camskill works out cheaper than what they pay wholesale. Also get them fitted, balanced and old tyres dissposed of free :)

Only 15's on the DC2 anyway so tyres are really cheap for me. I've stuck with 195/55/15's atm but after reading the forums a lot of people have swapped to 195/50/15's and upon checking these work out quite a lot cheaper (£36 compared to £56 for T1R's). Would it be worth changing over next time?

Whoa, 4 months ago when I fitted 4 x 205/45/17 Hankooks V12 cost me £389.60 from Blackcircles.

Just checked, the same 4 tyre fully fitted now costs £451.28.

£61.68 increase !
