Nokia N9

Such a shame its a fantastic phone if they had priced this right it could have been a revival for nokia but its too pricey and too late :(

They decided they didn't want it to be a success. They priced it up as a high end smartphone when it isn't, and refused to release it in key markets (for example it's not on offer in; UK, Germany, France, India, USA). It has not place in their strategy anymore so they've killed it. As much as I would love to have one it's an absolute waste of money to buy.

Why do that though?

and more importantly, companies that are buying it knowing what it is and knowing how well it'll sell will be left with stock they're unable to shift.

Because they have decided to concentrate soley on WP and dont want to develop their own OS anymore. They commited to releasing at least one Meego device prior to making the decision and this is it - they dont want it to be a success as that would undermine their decision to ditch it.

While its a shame as i think it had big potential, WP7 looks great and i'm looking forward to seeing what Nokia is bringing to the table.

I don't understand how you can say it's a waste of money if it does everything the OP wants and the OP likes it?

It might be a waste of money for you, but if it has features the OP needs (be functionality or style) then to him it could be good value.

I understand, I'm just perplexed as to why some companies are asking for pre-orders knowing that it'll be a flop.

Because you're paying premium phone money for a device with no future, unreliable manufacturer support and no guarantee it'll do everything you want in one years time, let alone two.
Smartphones should be flexible, what happens if/when Facebook/twitter change their API and your device doesn't do what it used to?

What is this nonsense about a future? When you buy a TV do you worry that it's got no future?

Like i said how do you know the phone doesn't do everything the OP wants?

If it lasts him 2 years (which it will need to do by law or he could just return it) then the job's a good one.

If Facebook or twitter change their api and you can't access them on the phone then you have bigger issues to worry about as you won't be able to access them in firefox, chrome, IE, opera etc.. either.

Not only that, but a phone with more memory, dual core processor and a decent camera (not better, but good enough in comparison) is nearly £120 cheaper!

I really do want an N9, will most likely end up getting the WP7 version if it's priced at single core level, don't mind a bit of a premium, but this current price is ridiculous even if you want the phone.

Especially as it's not going to be supported in the uk.

The whole point of the N9 is the OS not the hardawre, and it looks fantastic and i would buy one but not at that price. iOS looks just the same as symbian and android and the only one different are from micrsoft. I wont be replacing my galaxy tab 7 till something really revolutionary comes out and until then it will more than suffice.

Yes, of course, if I want to watch HD freeview I need to make sure I buy a TV with a DVB-T2 adaptor in it, or understand I'll have to buy a separate box.

I don't, so what? Whether it does or doesn't do everything he needs right now makes no difference to what I've said.

The hardware might last two years, there's nothing to say the software will still be as useful or functional.

What on earth are you talking about? Why would facebook or twitter changing their external api make any difference to your browser?

Basically as nice as the phone looks, it's very very expensive for what it does and is essentially stuck in time as far as features go, it's not a good buy.

You were assuming that he would use an app for facebook and twitter, when there is no need, a browser will work fine.

You said the phone was a waste of money. For you it might be, for the OP is might not be.

People on these forums tend to overstate and over sensationalise software updates and support. I've never had support from a mobile manufacturer on any handset and have coped just fine.

I agree that it is a costly device

Your using a Galaxy tab 7 for a phone? RESPECT!!!!!!

The N9's got 1GB of memory, so technically it's only lacking a current gen SoC to be 'up to date'. The rest is as good if not better than the 4S/SGS2.

Actually the N9 browser is a bit flakey....
For the money they're asking the N9 is categorically a waste of money, and even more so if you're not using it's built in functionality, if you aren't using the key differentiators of the device (tight integration with web services), you'd have to really really like the way MeeGo looked because you could buy an iPhone or almost any Android device for the same money, both will do everything the N9 does and more.

Support for phones now is a very important factor IMO, the OS' they run are highly complex and will by their nature have bugs in. Until iOS and Android came along with the notion that you might want to fix these bugs or add function you had to hope the bugs didn't affect you or you could work around them, do you remember how many issues Nokia used to have with S60 devices? Every single one would have bugs of some kind and half the time they never released fixes.

"only"? the CPU and GPU were middle of the road components a year ago. It's like saying my system with 8GB RAM an SSD drive and 30" monitor only needs to replace the P4 CPU and 8500GT gfx card to be 'up to date'. It's true, but those two parts are rather important. There is nothing objectively better than the 4S or SGS2 in the N9.

lol bam0, getting a bit over excited for a phone that's not even being released in the UK?

Regarding price, we're only seeing rip off preorders/imports.
The 520 EUR 8GB iPhone 4 will be more expensive than a 16GB N9 for perspective, so if it was officially released the UK it would probably be priced under £400 for the 16GB. Sounds reasonable compared to all the other high end single core phones?
The browser looks perfectly fine too (the lack of flash/text reflow will be a pita though)

This is why I'd consider getting a N9 over the SGS2/iP4S.

  • They all have similar 1/3.2" 8MP shooters (I prefer Nokia's way of prioritising shutter speed over ISO. Lack of 1080p is not a huge issue)
  • The N9 has a ~600 cd/m2 AMOLED with the best anti-glare coating (It whoops everything else for outdoor usability and that's my main priority tbh, 4" is a nice size too.)
  • It's got the best design/unibody construction. (by miles!)
  • Decent standard apps + free sat nav (I don't download many apps/games)
  • 1GB for the spanking new OS to play with (Looks more interesting than WP7/iOS/Android)
  • Newer SoCs are still on the 45nm node (No battery life improvement)

I might get one if it drops below £250. Apparently there an update with 3500 improvements coming soon and the phone will be supported for at least 2 years. I also don't understand why they picked wp7 over this

Look at the pricing across Europe 599 EUR for the 16GB N9, you can get the 16GB iphone 4 for nearly 100 EUR less. They have intentionally over priced it and it's not a high end single core phone. The HTC Sensation, that's can reasonably be called a high end single core phone, £360.
Also the browser does not look perfectly fine, no bookmarks, incomplete HTML5 support and dodgy rendering.

Your first comment re shutter speed/iso doesn't actually make any sense. 2 and 3 are subjective opinions, great if they work for you. 4 and 5 are irrelevant; both iOS and Android have decent apps and Google offer free sat nav (yes it requires a data connection). I don't care how interesting the OS looks, it's dead. Trace size isn't the only measure of performance and power consumption.
