Nokia N9

Because MS gave them a lot of money :) There's a lot of advertising of this phone in countries where it's being released, SGS2 levels of advertising including tv ads and boards. It's being given a bit of a go at least by Nokia and while I admit I personally see it as a dead end path, it's a very good looking dead end and if you're more of a phone person rather than an ios/android/bbos person then this device will do you well.

Nokia, if you think about it, are still the only phone house who try to make vibrant, colourful and fun looking devices. Outside of gimmicky crap like pink Samsung's that come with makeup (this is the worst thing Orange ever did by a mile) there's not really any designers who push boundaries any more.

If I could make a frankenset it would be the battery optimisation from Symbian, the OS of iOS, the flexibility of Android, the screen from Samsung, the reliability from Nokia, the sync from BB, the Camera from Nokias N series and SE would sell it to me for 75% of the usual price in order to get market share ;)

I might get one if it drops below £250. Apparently there an update with 3500 improvements coming soon and the phone will be supported for at least 2 years. I also don't understand why they picked wp7 over this

It's quite simple, to be able to take on Apple and Google, they need the help of Microsoft.

Not this again. A phone doesn't need a future. Use it for 2 years then get a new one. Simple.

any major flaws will be fixed so there is no worry there. Even though most mobile apps are useless, you'll still have access to current Nokia apps, and potentially android apps (read more on that one).

Depends what you do on it. Probably no film purchasing or support, cost of apps, just to throw it in the bin etc. Phones are much more than a phone these days and have a complete Eco system surrounding them. Which only run on certain OS due to drm issues or in the case of apps what they are programmed for.

Thats probably a large part of the reason why their god awful symbian phones continue selling because of the ability for companies etc to either use ancient apps or design their own easily.

But is no good to you, if you buy apps and films. If you intend to change OS in a year or two. All that money spent down the drain.

no not at all, I wasn't disagreeing at all. I certainly wouldn't be spending my money on an N9!

Its funny how over the last couple of years the idea of an OS having a life has taken on the sort of important Nokia had with their car kit connections which is why there's still a huge demand for Nokia 6310 handsets from over 10 years ago.

its sort of ironic that one of the things that gave them market dominance before has turned on them and has given them a mountain to climb to get back in the game.

I personally think the WP7 thing will pay off for them, my E7 and N8 were some of the best built handsets I've ever used but the software was awful.

I have no idea what is going in in "nokia's" head tbh.. what the hell they are already loosing in the market and then they release a phone for 500 notes with an OS that no one wants to risk trying for that price.. seriously have their marketing team started smoking pot or something..

They haven't got much choice ATM, they are pretty stuck and screwed until they release w7p, until then they are flapping like a fish out of water.

Not many people agree with me when I say it's a great os. :(

They will, the 7.5 update has made it good and worth while. Samsung are now going to do it properly and of course nokia. Windows have halted their Market slide and things will keep getting better. But it will explode when w8 tablets come out and they have a more or less unified range.

It is a great OS, it's like iOS but different enough that it feels different. With Microsoft behind it, it's going places.

People will change their tune soon enough.

Your first comment re shutter speed/iso doesn't actually make any sense.

Check out 'Automatic Motion Blur Reduction AMBR' (fancy name for automatically increasing gain for a faster shutter speed :p)
I think they still target 1/30sec in low light, great for parties/kids running around indoors etc (and your not thinking about selecting mode/camera/scene settings)

i have a nokia n8 and i like it a lot, but im surprised anyone is buying these especially at over £500.

the n8 is now less than £200 and im sure i saw it for sale on a site for £179 on hot uk deals last week, is this n9 really three times as good?

3 x 179 = £537 (the n9 is around this price is it not?)

the xperia play is now only £150 too, which should have a stable cynaogen mod on it very soon, is the nokia n9 3 times as good as that phone?

value for money wise, their are far better options out there. i dont believe in upgrading for the sake of upgrading, symbian belle will be released officially within a month or two on the n8.

my phone will be revitalized and do me for another year possibly. nobody should think that they have to upgrade their phone every year, its all a marketing gimmick in order for you to spend money needlessly. do you buy a new lawn mower every year?

the n9 does nothing which the n8 cannot do, so what if its slightly faster at taking pictures. and im pretty sure the official release of belle will speed up the n8 a bit.

my next phone will most likely be the iphone 5 if it can be jailbroken (so i can get free apps) or the samsung galaxy s3. until then the n8 will be suffice. i bought the n8 at the time and paid a premium because it had the best camera phone out at the time and also had the best free sat nav at the time. it was worth paying the premium for those things. the nokia n9 doesnt have anything which would make me consider paying a premium for.

The user experience of an N8 is simply unacceptable. I find it unusable, which is such a pity for a phone with such a decent camera. There is a reason why it is so cheap. If you want to go for value the SII can be had for £300/£310 new. Its not necessarily about value, its about the OS and user experience for me..
