What career did you want at 18 and what career do you have now?

When I was 5 I wanted to be a writer. That changed to wanting to be a scientist when I was 8. Now I'm a senior lab tech and I've had pieces published, so I'm halfway to each of my goals. Together, that's one whole life goal achieved. Win.

Right now? No 100% clear idea, but I'm thinking Engineering. I'd like international opportunities too.

Before that, I was thinking something to do with science as I loved it, but my maths has always let me down in that regard (making up for it now though, I hope)

I also thought about creative stuff, but honestly, I couldn't live by the paycheck for my entire life. I'd be happier making money, and coming home to do that stuff as a hobby.

(I'm too indecisive at times and it kills me)

At 18? I think I wanted to make computer games. :)

Now, I'm a game programmer, although I'm doing server stuff, rather than game side. But I find it much more fun. :D

Always think to myself what if I chose to do IT/computing as an A level.

I'm trying to stick with going for one career and one goal but my brain keeps thinking but what if.

IT Consultant

Unemployed

though I'm trained as an Electrician (Theory) I lack the experience which is hard to get to complete my NVQ3.

My younger brother just worked for free to get the experience. Then he was taken on later. Just an idea.

Now works for himself.

I wanted to work with computers.

Am a security analyst (computers)

At 18 i had no clue, id been working full time more or less since 15 waiting and kitching work, moved to bars, then had a pub and now in IT support! 8 years of working and im in a position of been constantly down and annoyed at the crap job and even more so the company! I think ive wanted to be a paramedic for some time i suppose but not sure about how to do it and cant afford full time uni so will wait and see!

To be honest the only things that interest me are:

Air traffic controller
Engineer

But Im worried i wont be able to do them due to them being too much hard work :(

Work in some form of IT role, now network support tech. Although there were other careers I wanted to have when I was younger. But chances were slim

Up to 18 I wanted to be something to do with the games industry, at 18/19 anything to do with computers but I had a bad experience with working in an office environment - now at 33 I run my own cleaning business. It's not really what I wanted to do but meh, it pays the bills and I don't answer to anyone else.

at 18, wanted to be an electronic and electrical engineer, specialising in high voltage engineering. Studied it for 4 years at university.

Graduated, couldn't get a job in industry, fell into a wildlife rehab job! Now back at college at the grand old age of 34, studying NC Conservation and Countryside Recreation, with the aim of starting a park ranger / forestry career in a couple of years once I also get the HNC / HND under my belt.

Also a side line in semi-pro landscape photography!

Didn't expect life to be going in this direction when I was at school, but that's life!

I am hopefully doing that degree! Should I be worried? Did you just ran out of luck or is it the nature of the degree?
I still don't really know what I want career rise, I love electronics and I know that I could get a good career out of it. If all else fails and I end up disliking the subject, it is quite easy to go into finance from it.

I was always awesome with computers, We just clicked. So working in the IT sector somewhere was to be expected.

I am currently employed, but only for the sake of not signing on JSA. I hate the job, I work in a warehouse.

My career path is still that of working in IT, I would love to teach it at a university level. But I'm a way off. And considering I have a home to keep, And the fact i cant not be working. Finding the time to get a teaching degree to go with my IT qualifications is hard. Doing the placements the degree require are impossible while working already.

So to sum up

I wanted to work in computers

I now work in a warehouse

I do 3rd line support which is kinda where I aimed to be when I dropped out of uni doing computer studies then getting a job being a phone monkey. Now I'm here, I need a new aim as I'm getting bored!

At 18 I wanted to work in Marketing, now at 24 I am a security guard, although I am still getting interviews for marketing jobs, because I don't want to be 40 stuck in a security job. I WANT MY WEEKENDS AND BANK HOLIDAYS OFF!
