Not really sure where I'm heading with this thread, but er....

Is it supposed to sound like a van? Jesus christ, "they" told me diesels have got more refined and quieter over the last 20 years :p

This is what they sound like, yes. Ask any owner though and they will explain how you cant tell its a diesel, you cant hear it in the cabin and that the torque is amazing.

Now you know why we get so frustrated with the diesel owners on here claiming none of this is the case :p

My 2011 A6 doesn't sound at all like a van despite probably being pretty much the same engine. I'm sure it's all down to sound deadening.

Turn the stereo up :)

I will post a video of it tomorrow. I'm also pretty amazed at the poor NVH, it just feels like a mid 80s minicab to me. Maybe I was expecting too much.

Goes pretty well when you prod it, I have to say.

I have to say that out of all the diesel cars that I've heard from the outside, the one that sounds the least tractorish is the BMW.

The Mercedes diesel engine sounds awful.

Does a bright orange Manta not have the right image for work ;)

Anything diesel sounds like a tractor, the cabin rattle isn't much different from
driving something old mind you

My diesel is fantastic! You cant tell its a diesel even from the outside, you cant hear it in the cabin and the torque is amazing!

Boys...... as if I would personally choose and buy a diesel Jetta for myself! It's just a company car temporarily assigned to me while I'm on a project with work.

First I had a 58 A3 2.0 TDI which went okay, looked good, had a nice but uncomfortable interior (who designed the centre console with those ridiculous hard plastic grab handles that dig into your knee??)

Then I had an 11 plate C3 VTR+ Diesel which was comfortable, rattly, slow, unpredictable on the motorway, but had a panoramic windscreen which I loved.

Changed to the Jetta yesterday which feels gutsier than the others, but sounds like a van, doesn't stop, feels like sitting in a minicab, has horrendous wash out understeer and compared to the other two it generally drives like some kind of agricultural vehicle.

I've always been quite impressed with the 2.2CDTI Honda engine in terms of noise. Obviously you can tell, but it's not like the bag-of-spanners fest that is the VAG offerings :p

The Honda Diesels are the best imo at the mid end of the market, for noise anyway. Even the BMW 4 pots are pretty noisy tbh.

I always take diesel owners views with a pinch of salt anyway, ive never been able to get the claimed fuel economy figures:p

, ive never been able to get the claimed fuel economy figures:p

I dunno, I had an S-Max 2.0 TDCI hire car a while back and averaged 54MPG driving from Teddington to Southampton and back. I thought that was quite good for a big heavy people carrier laden with computers :p
