Granted of course, but all the "empty land" before these towns and cities were quite the size they are today were also usually owned and or used by someone probably a fair amount of time back then too. It's a gradual process over time, eventually because of soil errosion - which it is a particular problem in the UK I believe - land value and market conditions continue broadly as is more land will come available over time. There is also some scale in redeveloping height wise also. I don't think we can make the mistake of going *snapshot* look about and say "this is the UK". It will transform as it has throughout time.

Do you love the Soviet victory and Stalin's occupation of half of Europe? You loved sending millions into torture, slavery, repression and death? Go and read Solzenitzen's 'The Gulag Archipelago' and come back and tell us what a great war it was.
