Interesting topic I had with some friends the other day, but basically, I feel that everyone kind of has an aim for a salary that they'd be happy with in life, and then wouldn't mind plateauing at that point, so what about you?

I'll give you various options :)

1:I don't care about money, just so long as I do something I enjoy
2:<£18000
3:£18000-£23000
4:£23000-£30000
5:£30000-£40000
6:£40000-£50000
7:£50000-£75000
8:£75000-£100000
9:£100000-£250000
10:£250000-£500000
11:Psht, I'm not going to plateau - MILLIONS!

Personally I think I'll be happy once I'm earning 6 figures. Beyond that I'm indifferent. (for now)

Seeing as the surprising uptake of thread, any chance of a poll mods?

5 would be fine for me, it's above the national average, more than enough to cover basic needs and still allow for a fair few wants.

It would also come with fewer compromises like an £80k+ job would entail.

Relative to my current job, it would haver to be 6. In a few years I do want to be up to 8, but I would be very much happy with 6.

ATM? 23-30.

Would allow me with loads of disposable income to do generally what I wanted, but not enough that I'd be reckless.

I'm in 4 right now and I'm pretty happy, got everything I want really. Although as you get older I imagine you'll find more things to get interested in, more hobbies etc. So probs 5 or 6 would be good.

I would be happy earning a wage at all after leaving uni, as long as I could afford food, shelter, electricity and Internet. I have all the luxuries I'll need for a while.

However, by the time I'm 30 I would be aiming for 60 grand a year, as I want to surpass my family (I'm the only one in my family to ever go to uni)

And hopefully a decent degree in maths will help me get into a decent job :)

As long as my family can afford to eat, pay the bills, keep a roof over my head and have a little free money left over I'm happy :).

Ideally it would be nice to hit #5 one day (which is a hell of a lot up in this corner of the country), but as long as the first paragraph is fulfilled I'm good :).

My PhD was paid in the 6 bracket, my new job will pay me in the 7 bracket and I hope to move to the 8 bracket within 2 years. My girlfriend earns in the 8 bracket already and may move to the 9 bracket within 3 years.

Non of this is in the underpaid UK though.

Generally your expectations and spending habits change as you earn more money, i'm happy with my current position 5 but hope to move into bracket 6 start of next year.

Currently at:
5:£30000-£40000
Would be happy to plateau at
7:£50000-£75000
because anything above that would probably turn to too much work, but that said, I'm only 26, I've got a lot more demands to come, and would rather work hard while I can and afford myself the ability to slow down later on. So maybe
8:£75000-£100000
if I can get there and then a step down to something more enjoyable/with more downtime.

Currently 8 with overtime and offshore, will be 9 in a year or so and then 10 after a number of years and a move to client side hopefully.
