I realise it has already been mentioned in the Turn your clocks back thread, however thought that frankly it deserved a thread of its own...

Conservative MP Rebecca Harris explained her proposal before parliament to move the clocks forward an hour from next summer in order to bring Britain in line with most of Europe and make better use of daylight and save lives.

I really don't like the concept of this...

For the idea of it saving lives - then surely it might save more in the evening but more people would die during morning, or vice versa etc...

Personally I think it's a bit to 'euro integration'...

I realise it's not quite a EU happy thing, however, what really bugs me, is it seems to break logic, as at no point would GMT be in Greenwich...

Cant see this happening at all. Scots are not keen straight away it seems and cant see us having a different time to the scots.

I was listening to this in the car earlier. Wouldn't it make more sense to do that the other way? So that mornings are lighter and evenings darker? That way children can go to school in day light during the winter, and it would be dusk at best when they leave at 3 PM.

My mother reminded me that this was once attempted before in the 70s I think it was, and it was aborted very quickly because it was found to be very unsuitable.

Complete darkness at 9.30am? No ta.

Lets make kids walk to school in the pitch black, first thing in the morning when people are rushing to get to work having just woken up and are still groggy. Yeah, way safer Rebecca.

Sounds good to me, the numbers support it being safer to have lighter evenings than lighter mornings.

This drives me nuts.

Most people in favour of this point to countries like spain and italy where its much brighter in the evenings during winter. Of course it is they are further south.

December 22nd UK will get just over 7 hours of sunshine, spain and italy will be looking at over 9.

Changing clocks isnt magicaly going to give us more hours of sunshine, for the majority of workers in middle of winter they are still going to end up going to work in the dark and then leaving work in the dark

At least they are using an evidence based system. I'm betting it will be found that their will be less deaths and more productivity

I'm cautiously in favour of this, depending on just when it starts to get light in the mornings.

I'm in favour of having more hours of sunlight in the evenings, plus it makes sense to be more in line with the rest of Europe.

I don't think anyone is that stupid. It means we would get an hour less light in the morning and an hour more light in the evenings. So instead of sunset occurring at 6:00pm on 22/12 it would happen at 7:00pm. To me that would be pretty useful. I don't really care when the sunrises, I just get out of bed then go to work, it makes no difference if I do that in the dark or light.
