Should people on the dole have sky HD?

I think you're trying to lure the Mumsnet crowd here again with that kind of posting. Who are we to decide what's essential for children or not, we're just a bunch of computer geeks.

I think that anyone with an iota of common sense would bet their life that Sky tv is not and will never be an essential item.

It ****es people off because every now and then when benefits are the topic of choice on the news they always have a few scallies on the dole saying that they can't afford this that and the other whilst puffing on a cigarette. When they interview them in their house they inevitably have a large flat screen probably with Sky.

That annoys the hell out of me. If you can afford Sky tv on the dole and you are not having to go hungry then there is something going wrong with the amount of money you are getting.

On a rather frivolous note...

Can you think of a better time to have 1000's of channels of crap, than when you have nothing else to do all day.

Seems like the perfect product and lifestyle match tbh.

Bit of a vicious circle though.

Be much better to get rid of sky and the interweb to take away some of the distractions preventing someone from getting off their arse and looking for a Job....

It wont happen but Iwould not be wholly against it.

I'm not, I'm female, I HAVE THE POWER :p I've been on the dole and all I spent it on was stuff I didn't really need and train tickets!! Only needed about £10 a week for food, and a family of 4 can be fed on £30 a week or less, if you are savvy about buying food!

To say someone can't have sky because they are out of work is a bit harsh.

Just because someone receives benefits doesn't give anyone else the right to tell them how they spend their money.

True but when she's on benefits paid for by people who can't afford it themselves something is a little ****ed up !

The internet is amazingly useful when looking for a job.

Of course they shouldn't. Dole should provide a minimum living standard. Sky normal or hd are a luxury and should not be affordable.

People on the dole should be given an allowance in vouchers, so so much for food in vouchers that can be spent at tesco/asda/morrisons, some for clothing, some for furniture and a small amount of cash for small things and luxuries.

That'd encourage people to get a job..

but keeping the unwashed masses entertained with by targeting them with jeremy kyle , the xfactor and other drivel keeps them out of trouble and away from me.

its a small price to pay really

have you seen the cost of benefits.
I also believe that if work offered much more than benefits, people wouldn't be so lazy and would accept lower standard jobs and not have the, that job is below me attitude.

Oh and why do you need sky for that. £12 a month terrestrial.

You serious? I wouldn't like to be your kids. :p

I actually cancelled Sky last month, only to re-instate it before the final cutoff date as I realised I wouldn't be able to see all the F1 races live and in HD.

**** you, BBC.

On a more serious note...

If they are claiming the correct amount they are entitled to, then they can choose to spend it however they choose, it may not be sensible but its their choice.

If they wanna use the money for Sky HD and sit in the dark with no heating and eat cheap horrible food, then so be it.

Yeah it is stupid, my mum works full time and we can't afford it... So why should some lazy mother like that be able to?

You can get jeremy kyle, xfactor and associated rubbish on terrestrial digital tv cant you?

What's worse is I bet she's watching it on a Technika 32" with the worlds worst grey-grey response and tinny inbuilt speakers.

/av geek bait :D
