Should people on the dole have sky HD?

Firstly,

How can you tell it's HD from hearing it?.

Secondly.

The real question is,

Should people out of work get £6.98 per week to spend on entertainment (also for entertainment for children - the cost of sky+HD).

Now, telling them to keep it quite, that's a seperate matter - but I think you need a little perspective on what accounts for entertainment or a reasonable sum of money.

I spend four times that on my coffees at work.

People on the dole should be given an allowance in vouchers, so so much for food in vouchers that can be spent at tesco/asda/morrisons, some for clothing, some for furniture and a small amount of cash for small things and luxuries.

That'd encourage people to get a job..

I've been suggesting this for a long time! Think it would be a great idea, it's got limits, and issues, but still would work well....

Thinking about it OP tell her to just get a freeview box if she really wants.. Much cheaper and for some reason it goes against my morals less.. (warped they be)

Sorry mate, but it does seem like bitterness.

To say someone can't have sky because they are out of work is a bit harsh.

Well the payslip I received today reads:

PAYE Tax £358.60
National Insurance £ 216.68

So, a total of £575.28 is being taken off me for the government kitty. It takes me almost a week to earn that money, and I have to surrender it against my will. For what - so that feckless ***** like that can live off the back of my hard work, and that of every other tax payer in the country?

It's not bitterness, it's well founded genuine anger. Not to mention my pensioner grandparents get so little help these days it's unreal - they fought in the war, they worked their entire lives. What about disabled people who struggle, again so that wayne and waynetta slob can live on benefits?

Bring back poor houses and make them earn their bread like the rest of us have to. Can't afford to raise your kids? Unlucky, welcome to the adoption service. Ding...next!

I'm not, I'm female, I HAVE THE POWER :p I've been on the dole and all I spent it on was stuff I didn't really need and train tickets!! Only needed about £10 a week for food, and a family of 4 can be fed on £30 a week or less, if you are savvy about buying food!
Lol.

If you had kids & were feeding a family of 4 on £30 a week I'd get them taken off you for mistreatment.

"What's for dinner mom!" - Kid A

"RICE!" - Mom

"YEYEYEYEYE!! WOOT!!! RICE, LAST NIGHT WE EAT THE RAT THE CRAWLED INTO THE FRIDGE & DIED OF STARVATION, RICE IS GREAT!". - Kid B

Actually, try shopping in iceland, could get a fair wack for £30 :p

I pay much more tax than you do.

I don't like scroungers like you getting more services than you pay for out of MY TAX, the next time you go to the hospital you will be using MY MONEY to pay the doctors.

That argument works all the way to the top.

In my view benefits are for survival purposes only, i.e. accommodation, food, essential utilities. In a fair world anyone in receipt of benefits should not be spending on it on Sky HD, which is very much a luxury item. If they have that much money, they should contact the benefits office to cut it, so that someone else in desperate need can have it. That's how it should be.

For all you know, she has friends or family that work for sky. This is the time of the year where friends and family discount codes are given out. Sound quite bitter to me.

not in HD? and they get all the catch up services feeding them episodes of "the only way is essex"

Ahh I forgot about HD.

Having never watched Jeremy Kyle in HD I can only assume that the ability to see the needle marks in junkies arms as they gesticulate wildy at each other claiming they never slept with the cat while their 18 year old GF was looking after her great great grandchild, coupled with the detail required to pick out said girlfriends one remaining tooth, transforms the show into a BAFTA award winning masterpiece.

If that is the case then I can see why Sky+ HD should be an essential human right. :D

Actually, you just need to not be snobby about prices. I can make a tuna pasta bake for 8 people for about £3, among other things, and this is including fruit and veg, crisps and the occasional more unhealthy snack too. Asda smart price is a heaven send, all the stuff tastes nice and its all very cheap. Fruit and veg can be cheaply bought from a green grocers or a market and any left overs can be frozen (unless its rice) and used again. As long as you stock up on essentials like pasta and rice and tinned food, you will be fine. People over spend on food these days, especially on food you don't need. You just need bread, eggs, milk, sandwich fillers and then plan meals so you know what you need to buy. It's not hard to be honest, if I can easily do it, so can doley mums, as long as they don't spend their money on unnecessary luxuries like Sky HD, cigerettes, loads of drink, loads of unhealthy snacks

Why not direct your bitterness towards the government who allow all this to happen? You've also undermined your rant by suggesting that your income tax and NI all go to people on benefits and nothing else.

Surely the issue is that you're both paying tax and NI where as she isn't.

See, people like you are the issue. I can't spend £30 on food for 4 people for a week. Yes you can, quite easily. You just might have to.... think about it. You know, that thing that people do when they can't afford to just get whatever the hell they want.

If you can afford sky on the dole and you are not starving then there is an issue. The issue being that you are getting too much.

My parents both worked bloody hard their whole life and we never got anything like what children today have. We never had a games console, never had more than terrestrial tv, never got new clothes apart from christmas and birthdays. We ate proper food that my mum had cooked from scratch and she spent £80 every 2 weeks and we ate really well.

Its not a case of can't, its a case of can't be bothered to do it. If you can't cook good from scratch then ******* learn. If you can't afford to buy your children the latest trainers or phone then don't. Its a really simple system.

You can re-use rice easily enough. I do it on a regular basis and have done for years. I don't see why more people don't buy more smart price stuff, especially the stuff where literally the only difference is the packaging with things like pasta.

Last time I was in Asda I was getting a few packets of spaghetti, they were about 90p a packet (1KG) and that was fine until I noticed the smart price stuff at 18p a packet (also 1KG), exactly the same stuff, just in a different packet. I did the sensible thing and bought 5 packs of the smart price stuff.

I don't get why more people don't shop like that, regardless of monetary situation, when it's exactly the same stuff, get the cheapest, in the case of the spaghetti, it was nearly 5x expensive just for a different packet.

Thank you!! I learned this the hard way, when I only had £10-15 to spend on food, and I quickly learned how to be savvy with it and cheaper brands and stores are not to be dismissed! Now I can easily feed myself on £10 or less a week, with added extras of crisps and maybe a naughty chocolate bar!

Oh, I was always told it was risky to reheat rice!! And yup, even though I can afford more expensive stuff now, I don't because I don't see the point, the smart price stuff is equally as good! In fact, I found some smart price things, better than actual brand products!

That argument works all the way to the top.

I was privately educated from the beginning of my schooling to the end - so saved you a few bob there.

I have no kids of my own - also saved you a few bob there.

I rarely use the health service, and obviously pay for my prescriptions.

I contribute to our infrastructure via fuel duty etc.

I also drink and smoke and pay a LOT of tax that way.

All of the local services are covered by the council tax I pay.

I have bupa cancer and serious illness care - so I won't be using the NHS when smoking does eventually get to me.

So what services am I using which you are paying for?

I agree that argument goes all the way to the top, but surely you would prefer people to make a contribution to society rather than just leech from it? I don't care that people on NMW pay almost no tax at all - they're still contributing as much as they can in their current employment and furthermore are not parasitically drawing money from the kitty which they don't need to. My problem lies with those who see it as absolutely fine to claim benefits for years on end and feel they have an entitlement to it just because the system says so.

I am morally obliged to provide for myself, and I do. As do you. The argument here is about those who don't.
