Er surely you will have at least 1ft of fence underground in some concrete footing/pad.

I would have thought you would want an 8ft post so you can drop it a decent depth giving you solid foundations.

There's a problem with your maths, certainly ;)

yes, 6ft 6" is now allowed as a maximum, you realy want 20"-24" of post concreted in, personally id have gone with 9ft posts and nip it down to 8ft 6"

Sorry my typo mistake.......

5ft 6" panel
1ft Gavel
9ft Post

so once 2ft is in the ground it will leave my post at 7ft (4" above the fence)

Will that cause a problem, can my neighbor complain to the council about that???

theres 12" in a foot, not 10" so it would be 6" higher if you put the posts in at 2 foot,
cut 6" off the bottom of the post, job done :)

Back garden has a party fence running between me and the neighbor. At the moment its 4ft, however i want 6ft 6" (legal limit) as its more privacy.

They have declined my offer to replace the old fence with the new one as they said it will block out the light to the garden  (I'm paying for it all), i said we either move the old or i run on my land.
Answer i got was "put it on your own land then)

I have been very polite thought the process.

Any tips or advice, it gets fitted soon. I will be running on my own land alongside the old fence (will look terrible their side which is something they are finding had for them to grasp). I think its now come down to being stubborn over the benefits of a new fence, the old is nackard..

I was told if we put the fence up they will destroy it. Any advice???

Thanks.

Replace the old fence with one of equal height and save all the hassle.

Just to really get your neighbours goat up I would buy a cheap cctv camera about 60 quid and point it at the back garden covering both fences so that you also catch them in the act if they touch either fence.

Best to have ammo for the impending neighbour war your unreasonable neighbours obviously would like to have.

Castiel always the pacifist :p

By building what is effectively a new boundary you could, if enough time passes, end up losing the land to the other property.

Better to come to an accomodation with your neighbours instead of being belligerant about it.

Do you own a house?

When you put so much money and effort into making it what you want then why would i have a 4ft fence? Its not what i want and id not be happy with it. All other fences are 6ft 6 except the one next to me and the neighbor, the other neighbors obviously had the same thoughts as me.

I do understand what your saying, but im a good neighbour and im not having the fence that height to be a pain,it will serve a purpose. I do understand where they are coming from, i wish they would change their mind. ITs going to look so bad their side :(

You say hassle, hassle for who? Once the fence is up its end of story for me. They will see it every day :(

Thats why im posting this and speaking to council, so it doesnt become a future problem ;)

Thanks for all the inputs, ill cut 6" off the bottom. Job done :)

Yes I own a house, what has that got to do with anything?

You are changing not only your property, but theirs so have a little consideration for them, it seems like you want what you want and who cares what others think so do what you want anyway and live with the animosity caused with your neighbours.

Personally I would rather find a compromise and dont forget the 'nice' face of the fence has to face their property, not yours and after a period of time they could take your fence as the new boundary.

Be careful is all I'm saying, what price an extra 2ft of privacy?

We have a mixture of 4ft fencing and brick wall, with a 2ft trells with roses and ivy etc, it gives us privacy while not posing a barrier to light and looks good from boths sides.

Maybe a compromise in that vein would be more appropiate in the situation rather than just whacking up ugly fencing.

OP hasn't just whacked up a fence, from his first post they have said they've tried to have a conversation with the neighbours which resulted in them telling the OP that they'll destroy it if he puts it up.

I would have no interest in speaking with neighbours like that a second time round when all they had retorted with is threat.

Compromise goes both ways.

Stain the side of the fence to face his garden with the darkest stain you can lay your hands on. Also do as suggested above and have a CCTV system aimed with only the fence in view, and not his property.

I asked the question as you would then surly understand what its like work hard to make your house nice.

The old fence crap, it needs removing and is in bits (complete tat and looks dreadful). They wont pay to change it so why should i pay for another 4ft fence that i dont want.

I'm a good neighbor, i am not thinking of myself or id have just put the fence up on their immediate aggressive response. I want them to agree as they are not gaining anything, just a bad bad looking garden and some pride. Also i wont be giving them the nice panel, i am paying for the fence so i get to choose, i was told this by the council who have also told me the light situation will not count for them. I mean all other neighbours have 6ft and are happy, why should it be any different to the people living my side.

Its hard to get across the entire story and their arrogance. Its only 2ft..... Well its only 2ft higher and its not going to hide any light at all. I have a garage which is about 8ft my side and its not blocking any light.

To them its no longer about the fence, its about their pride. To me its about the fence. If it means i loose 6" of land to get a better fence then so be it, they can keep it.

IF it means ill have bad neighbors then so be it, ill carry on being polite, help them start their car if needs so. Its their loss not mine.

The idea of this thread was so that i can tread carefully and not have to remove or adjust the fence later on as i am having the garden paved. My house is having complete restore, modern great looking.

Thanks for your reply and input.
