I've been out of the loop some time and it's come to move the 40'' Samsung up to the room and something bigger into the living room.

I've been quite attracted to the thinner profile HDTVs, however I'm unsure whether most TVs these days are?

Are only the LED TVs in slimmer profile, or are most of them?

All TVs have got thinner, but those LCD TVs with an LED backlight start with a significant advantage when it comes to making skinny TVs. Just be forewarned though; sound quality has suffered tremendously. TVs are so thin that there's nowhere to put a decent sized speaker. Budget for a sound system on to of the TV price.

Looking in John Lewis the other day I noticed how thin TV'S have got including Plasma.

I have a Panasonic (50" Plasma) and this looks quite fat in comparission.

Thanks guys, not bothered about sound quality.

In stead asking in a new thread, can you recommend one, or indicate a guide price?
I'd want around 42 - 47 inches ( larger depending on how much it cost), not interested in 3d yet nor do I actually need freeview HD (but most TVs seem to come with it anyways). All I want is a good screen, with around 3 HDMI slots. All other fancy features are not needed.

New plasmas are very thin, my VT30 is thin for example

Ah right, so your top-of-the-line-65inch-tv-is-top-of-the-line? :D

At nearly 4k I'd expect it to be relatively tidy in it's form factor. Guess you missed the bit where I was asking for something with good picture quality, but little feratures? :)

LCD are the thinnest, as long as you like the aesthetics then the Samsung D7000/8000 range are very nice.

My point is more generally that plasmas have come a long way in form factor, and to be honest, most TVs are pretty thin these days. I personally didn't have form factor as a must have, PQ was by far the most important aspect.

My approach would be to identify a few models as the guys have suggested, take some Blu-Rays which represent the type of content you like and go and demo them at some retailers. PQ > saving a few mm on profile.

I've got a 46D800 and it is super thin.. image is amazing and it looks superb.
Sound ain't too bad either.

Off out now to pick up a second one.. thats how much it has impressed me.

And it ain't exactly cheap... and I ain't rich either lol

Highly Recommended!

I just picked up a Samsung 40" 6530. Totally blown away by the picture and style of the tv. Even the missus commented on how good it was and she doesn't usually care.

You can play movies from USB stick and watch Iplayer from the built in app.

Got a D8000 and it's a lovely bit of eye candy.

Media features are great as well, plays all sorts of files.

You hear that panasonic?

My panny st30 is thin ,loads thinner than the Sammysung that now lives in the games room.... Would recommend it to anyone. Whilst im still in the setting in period so my tv is turned down to the max but even so the differences are obvious compared to my 3 yr old lcd

I've ended up changing my mind somewhat.

I went for the Samsung UE37d5000 in stead, to perform gaming duties for the upstairs room. Initially I wanted to replace the 3-4 year old Samsung 40" downstairs, but decided if that TV's being replaced, I might as well go for 47"+.

I thought it's a better investment trying out the smaller LED and see how I like it and then have somethign to compare the larger/more expensive purchase to.

Admittedly, as I mentioned, I have been out the loop, but I'm astounded at the quality of the visuals, plus it's tiny in profile and rather good looking for the budget. At least I now have a decent comparison when I replace the TV downstairs.
