What window lickers did they hire to do these? A Monkey flinging its own crap at a sheet of paper could come up with better.
 
Bridget Riley is celebrated for her optically vibrant paintings. The horizontal lines in Rose Rose (pictured) indicate the direction of the Olympic swimming lanes or athletic tracks. Riley, who began her career using only black and white patterns, started to experiment with colour in 1967, the same year she began painting stripes.

Should give her a gold medal for using coloured paint and painting stripes.

Art like this is beyond pretentious, if you have to tell someone what a bunch of lines represents its defeats the purpose.
 
Some, like the top one are... okay. The rest are complete garbage. Seriously, if anyone else tried to submit those, they'd be laughed out of the building, but because they were submitted by a 'renowned' artist, they get picked. Utter crap...

Top row, left to right.

1) A cake, one of those ones with coloured icing which starts off nice but makes you feel sick after.

2) A sign showing don't walk near the edge or you will fall in.

3) The end result of a painting where I got annoyed halfway through and scrubbed my brush all over it.

4) Some kind a roman pot theme going on.

5) Bad wall paper.

6) Coffee mug rings.

Bottom row, left to right.

1) Some kind a horror movie poster, looks like blood splatter in black and white.

2) The doodling by a girl on her school book, same sort a font.

3) Same girl doodling just when in her late 50s.

4) Honestly I've no idea, and I don't think the artist did either.

5) The artist didn't bother finishing and thought that will do.

6) When the TV channel went down and you got that girl with a blackboard.

Certainly none of it says Olympics to me thats for sure.

I appreciate that art is subjective and sometimes it's about trying to get people to think/talk about the art rather than make an inherently attractive item but when you're trying to make something that will be associated with the Games then maybe it would have been worth going for the slightly more conservative approach of posters which were obviously related in some way to the Olympics. I can't help but feel that if you've got to explain them then they're not really doing their job as adverts for the Olympics.

There's a couple that are fairly obvious in their links but even then I don't think they're necessarily a great example of a poster.
 
The 2nd from last one bottom row.. I can't believe that the artist didn't hand that in with huge embarrassment and shame that THAT was his entry, as a renowned artist, for an Olympic Games poster.
 
To me, this kind of "art" appeals to a very limited section of society. I would say it is the people that love the unmade bed, or crap in a box, or whatever passes for art these days.

The Olympics is meant to be something the entire nation can get behind. These posters, all of them - except perhaps the one that says to me "This way to the synchronised swimming" - are not things that the entire nation can get behind. Indeed, if there were no captions from the BBC I wouldn't have a clue what 80% of them were even about.

That sprinting roman jug thing offends my eyes more than the rest, and I can't quite figure out why. It's .... it's grotesque!

Will I claim I could do better? No, but then I'm not an artist. In my own mind I know I'm terrible at art, but given the task of creating an London Olympics poster... I'd at least try to make it look like I'd gone to some decent amount of effort.

I could knock all of those up myself in less than an hour each. I really could.

Are these the ones that are going to be used, for definite? I can't bring myself to read the article/page again. If so, I am disappoint. :(
