You know when you watch a stand up comic on say, live at the apollo, and the camera pans over the audience showing them splitting their sides. Do you ever say to yourself "dear god, WHY are they laughing, its not even close to laugh out loud, and it only just merits a smile". I mean, I'm watching live at the apollo now and it's just the anti funny, the complete antithesis of comedy, and what amazes me is how these audiences find it so hilarious. There's very few comedians that imo are funny, but those ARE funny,.. steve coogan, jack dee, ricky gervais, lee evans, dave allen when he was alive, and one or two others, but just about all these others are utter garbage. Or maybe I've just seen it all before and done better? I appreciate everyone's sense of humour is different but even so, most of the so called comedy on TV today is just dreadful. Feel free to disagree :p

I think when you go to a live comedy show you're trying to have a great time so you're possibly a bit less demanding than you would be watching a comedy on tv.

Also you want it to have not been a waste of money.

I'm with you on that. Some stuff on live at the apollo is rubbish yet everyone else seems to find it brilliant. I have to say I do like Kevin Bridges - some of the stuff isn't funny but he just comes across as being so thick.

Ive seen a few that I didnt find funny at all.

Like the redneck american chap, who shouts, and has the short black hair. Hate him.

I suppose its really a matter of personal opinion and style of comedy you enjoy!! I love Lee Evans and Russell Howard all at the same time, and I even like Sarah Millican, but most female comedians just aren't funny

Peter Kay, he's just not funny at all to me, Phoenix Nights is awesome though, I think it's just his stand-up act, him and Ross Noble.

Went to see Mark Watson a few weeks ago and found him really funny!

Lee Mack I don't think is funny but he tries so hard to be funny its quite endearing sometimes.

But he is NOT funny.

. He is one of the most unfunny comedians out there in my opinion.

The thing about gervais is that he's not shouting at the audience with a stream of patter like most comics, ie, michael mcintyre. His style is dry and subtle like jack dee, underplayed, and that's what makes him funny, along with his clever observations.

I am yet to find a female comedian funny.

I used to think Sarah Millican (or however it's spelt) was awful.... But she's actually got better recently! So now a days I don't actually mind her.

But definitely +1 at OP, having just watched Live at the Apollo I thought the acts were awful... nothing like they used to be...

Most comedians aren't funny but that's OK because most people aren't funny either. If anyone has watched ITV's Show me the Funny, you'll know what I mean. Some of the acts are basically 'I'm in Wales, you guys like rugby and shagging sheep, right?', at which point everyone bursts out laughing. Dumb audiences deserve/encourage lazy comedy.

Yeah, most are ridiculously unfunny. Especially women.
That didn't take long.

Linda Smith was a hundred times sharper than your average, Family Guy quoting, young man.

I should have also said that the worst is Frankie Boyle. What a tool.
Yup, *******. His oh-so-shocking comments about people with disabilities ('Don't they sound weird? What about the smell?') is nothing a five-year-old couldn't think up, but it's hilarious because he's angry and on stage. There's nothing wrong with offending people, but there's nothing intelligent about his material.
