i5 2500k really that good?

A 2500k almost certainly runs cooler than a AMD.

Tough to say - overclocked to 4.5, my i5 is reading about 68-70 degrees loaded, which is way over what any sensible AMD system would report; but actual heat generation seems to be less, with the case feeling noticably cooler.

Guess it's all about where they measure the temperatures within the CPU. Maybe AMD take a reading on the outer edge and Intel are right in the middle of the silicon?

Amd temp sensors have never worked properly

what this guy said, AMD temperature sensors have always been a bit dodgy shall we say, my old X2 used to report a temperature of -2*C in a room that was ~21*C, so unless either my cooler was a monster and defied the laws of nature or the temperature sensor was hopeless! :D

And yet we trust them when we overclock :/

Also I just noticed from your sig that you've gotted core-by-core turbo working. Was having a play with that myself, but got horrendous instability (even with known stable speeds for all core counts) and shocking voltage jumps (like 1.45) that very quickly made me go back to all-cores mode!

Mind if I ask what UEFI/BIOS settings are you using to get things sensible? :)

Very happy with my 2500K overclocked to 4.5Ghz. Bulldozer will beat it easily on very multi-threaded apps, but at the moment few applications take advantage of its capabilities

just a +.04V additional CPU vcore and +.08V ATV
Make sure additional PLL voltage is enabled. I actually have it at 5.1GHz in single core mode now though it very rarely goes there.

Nice... Is that with offset voltage, or did you specify the actual vcore? (I'm nervous of trying and seeing since I watched it take a spike to 1.45 under auto mode :( )

*edit* Got my bravery up with coffee, tried a very very small 4.0x4 vs 4.2x1, perfectly sensible voltages, shall now go play. Thanks for the info! :)

Lol, well, that was a bit of a waste of time :P Managed to get it working, but only for very brief intervals, even with a single thread pinned to a specific core. Probably spent about 5% of its time at 4.8, rest of it down at the 4.5x4.

Combined with not being able to set a lower vcore to go with the lower speeds, I'm concluding it's probably not worth the effort. Interesting experiment though :)

you didn't cook your i5. CPUs don't die these days unless you are completely retarded and put 1.6V through it or something.

what did you do to this said 2500K? you didn't do what the other guy did and get mad so dumped 1.6V through it did you?

haha no....just used the motherboard's feature of recommended settings for 4.6 ghz...... ran the intel Burn test after it completed (successfully) the system froze .. (how ironic).... temps and voltages were fine.......Motherboard won't post and I've tried everything! Will find out tomorrow if it is toast or not......

Had my I7 920 running on 1.38-1.4v @ 4.2 Ghz for 2.5 years <90 degrees, and its still going strong!

Keep it till it dies I will!

I currently have a phenom 955 at 3.8ghz. I need to get a new motherboard because the one i got has x4 mode PCIE slot. So my xfire is playing up in some games. But ive been thinking since the bulldozer flopped. Should i just go Intel and get the i5 2500k?

It would be going with 2x 5850's and a eyefinity setup.

Also what are your thoughts on the Foxconn Quantum Force Flaming Blade GTI Intel X58 mobo on overclockers? Its really cheap but that might be because its trash. Im on a budget you see;)

Had the same processor as you (well, unlocked X2) and moved to an i5 2500k. The 2500k at stock gave me 10% more FPS in the games I play. Stock...3.3Ghz and this thing goes to 5Ghz (or more, haven't pushed any harder yet) ^^ It's a sick chip.

As for the motherboard, thats X58 tech, you're after p67 or z68 mobo for the 2500k
