Nokia N9

not sure what any of you might want to know but first impressions are very good, the UI is really intuitive and quick to learn.

There are a fair few apps in the store too which is interesting although clearly its no app store or (thank god) android market.

The double tap to unlock and transitions between windows are really slick and easy to learn.

The swipe down to close app is really cool as well as one pane being dedicated to everything you've got open much better even than Apple I'd say.

Performance, can't really say yet. Everything seems quick but I've hardly pushed it and doubt I ever will. Battery can't say. Signal doesn't seem incredible but it's not terrible but you do seem to be able to death grip it a bit.

It seems a bit weird that a lot of the memory is reserved for apps and system so on the 16gb I've got has about 8gb spare for media?

The overall first impression however is a awesome build quality of a level that is only really Nokia, only Apple are in the same ball park, whilst people like HTC and Samsung make undoubtedly awesome phones they can't (in my opinion) shake off that feeling of slight tackiness, platicness etc. No sign of that here, the thing feels like its one solid piece of something, screen, body the lot.

Very nice! :)

I'm ever more dissappointed by the day that Nokia decided to butt-**** Intel and Meego and start spooning with Microsoft and spooging their incredibly dull WP7.5 rubbish instead.

The N9 could have single-handedly jump-started Nokia's Smartphone business, it has the only OS that has a chance in hell of tackling Android's meteoric rise, but no, Elop knew better

Isn't it so telling that the N9 has universally received rave-reviews and people have been emailing nokia by the drove asking them to reconsider their strategy and they're being ignored? I can't see how this is anything but an attempt to either trash the company or a gesture of love from Elop to Microsoft.

Ok Ok Pictures!

The box!

Inside the box, ooh pretty!

Contents of the box, nothing particularly revolutionary other than a colourmatched case which also feels very high quality.

Then down to some side by sides...

iPhone 4S, Galaxy S2 and obviously the N9

So you can see a nice sliding scale of sizes, I've said a few times I think the S2 is too big, I personally think the 4S and N9 are bang on.

You can't really see but the S2 is the thinnest, then the 4S then the N9 but we're talking such tiny differences it makes little difference. Again I personally (and I know these are just opinions) think the S2 is too thin, the 4S and N9 feel like they have more substance to them.

Then the lock screen on the N9

Home screen, this is where all your apps are

and this is the summary screen where you can see all your open apps

And thats all the pictures! :)

Interestingly the top 3 pics are from the 4S, the rest are from my Sony Ericsson Arc and I think they actually look better, better colours etc. I haven't taken any pics on the N9 yet but I expect those pics will be pretty good too. Funny, been very impressed with the 4S camera but it seems to suffer in low light without the flash as here.

I'll try and update going forwards with thoughts etc but the main one at the moment is this thing seriously needs a better browser. There's no changing the home screen, no bookmarks, no tabs etc etc.

You can set bookmarks as apps but then do you want your homescreen full of bookmarks?

Anyway, I'm going to take the sim out of my 4S and live with this for a day or 2 (or as long as I can stand) and feed back!

right now, 5 I think... iphone 4, iphone 4s, arc, s2, n9 and then next week an 800.

The iphone 4 is my old one thats sold, my 4s is mine, the s2 is my work phone and the n9 and 800 are from a friend :)

just getting to grips with it and there's really good attention to detail, hard to explain but pressing the volume rocker give you the option to turn the ringtone volume up or down and if you keep going down it goes to beep first and then to silent.

The transition between panes is really cool with the next window seems to fade up out of the blackness behind the pane you're on now etc.

there are issues, not massive but everyone saying "OMFG this would have beaten android" etc are just wrong, some of the navigation is clunky and the app store is empty, thats the killer thing. You can't make people develop for a platform and even if they'd gone all out meego you'd stil have another platform competing for developers. I personally think launching hardware this slick into an existing ecosystem that isn't android really should do very very well for them.

You know what Im not that happy with mine. Its buggy and suffers from slowdowns. Such a bloody pity, Nokia wtf are you playing at. It HAS potential but I sense another N900..

Ok. Do NOT buy this phone, its buggy beyond belief. Just lost all my images, music and videos (only to get them restored in a geeky way using terminal). And now I am missing all of my messages and contacts.

in the interests of balance, I've been using mine since the posts above, the S2 has gone now and I've switched from using my iphone as my personal phone to my work phone (which gets used a lot less).

Loving my N9, its been absolutely rock solid, no issues at all, battery is fantastic, browser is great once you've gotten used to it and now when I pick up my iphone I'm trying to use the swipe gestures to close apps its so intuitive.

Christo I would suggest yours is faulty mate. I've hammered mine and it hasn't missed a beat.

The issues Im having are reminiscent of my N900 - loosing images, video etc - and the fix was exactly the same. This is an OS problem not my specific phone. Somehow I 'activated' this bug, not sure how. Looking at the maemo forum, the number of problems are pretty high (not not to N900 levels of course).

Im not on here specifically to complain, Im actually a Nokia fan boy (who would spend over £500 on a phone afterall.). The battery life really is excellent - that is something to applaud Nokia on, at last a phone you can leave on overnight that will work the next day - its like 1999 all over again. That is a big plus for me.

On top of the bugs, a lot of the swiping isnt as intuitive as I thought, it IS great but there are times when to go back you either have to press the back button, or cancel button or sometime close the app. Its just not as polished as I expected. Im coming from a Palm Pre 2, I love my swiping..

I hope the upcoming update fixes some of these problems..

I really want one of these, I just can't work out why.

Are there any UK stockists that are offering them with contracts, or am I stuck to buying SIM free imports?

handtec sell them in the uk. I got mine in 4 days from Sweden, there are also some on ebay.co.uk..

No real noticeable bugs with mine, nice and smooth. The only issue I have is one I expected all along, and that's the lack of apps. The Ovi store is a little lacking :( , which is bit of a shame but still content with it so far. I also picked up two Nokia 360 Play speakers, which are decent enough if a little pricey.

Rather than wait for the update to be push down to your handset you can use the Nokia Software Updater to get it. Currently downloading the file for my Singapore product code now.

update includes

NFC tag reading
Music controls on lock screen
Photo and video shooting with colour filters
More powerful multitasking
Swype for faster typing
Faster MfE, syncing only the active folders
Noise cancellation reduces background noise so your friends hear you better
Swipe down to close apps easily; now on by default
New notifications for the standby screen, such as charging and calendar
Multiple smaller improvements to operating system

I'm still umming and arring over pressing the buy button.

Are there any telnet clients available for it? Can you get Google Talk (or at least a messenger client that works with it) on Meego?

Is there any real need to go for the 64GB version over the 16GB?
