Ok so it all started when my hard drive died and I copied my origin and BF3 folder over to a new drive. Until then the graphics were superb. Now when I run BF3 even in Ultra I get a million FPS and it looks like everything is on low.

I figured something got screwed so deleted all BF3 stuff on my drive and reinstalled it from Origin.

Same thing!

What's going on? Obviously anything other than low isn't kicking in even when I select ultra/high/custom in the display options.

Funny you should say that.
I feel the same, looked great first 1/2 days, then I dunno what happened, looks awful to me despite having it on high preset.
This is on multiplayer I have the problem. Can barely make out enemies half the time!
Reinstalled and have deleted settings numerous times.
Hope we can find a solution!

I'm still totally stumped by this. I've reinstalled the game, reinstalled drivers....not sure what else to do.

It's totally unplayable like this, it looks like BF2 or something

Try downloading the BF3 Configurator and set it to ultra/custom without loading up the game. See if that works, as game might not be writing to the cfg file or something weird like that.

I think I read that theres a bug that forces the game into high / DX10 settings, even when set to Ultra / DX11, thats what could be going on.

And fanboys of this game defend it as being perfectly optimized and wonderful in every way :D

I think thats mainly because even on a £130 card like mine, i can run all ultra settings apart from msaa @ 1920x1200. With these settings the game looks as good as anything thats out on the pc. If i tried this with a few of the other great looking games i dont think they would be as playable as bf3.

From the benchmarks I've seen and comments I've read from others, I dont see the game as playable on Ultra settings without at least a GTX 570 or SLI GTX 560 tis.

I have been running ultra settings without any hastle at all. Just cant use msaa because the hit is to much. I also run without ambient occlusion or motion blur as i think the game looks better without. With these settings my average is usually in the 50-60fps mark which for me at least is more than playable, its very smooth. No need for crossfire or sli in this game unless you really want to use msaa which really does not add much over the fxaa high option.

Well yea, for 'Ultra' settings I would expect some AA as well.

Why? when the high post fxaa settings does a better job than msaa and gives no real hit to performance.

Maybe i should have said i do have aa and it smooths all edges not just some like msaa.

therealdeal - change your sig colour from red to something else, it hurts my eyes and is hard to read on the forum background!

Maybe try rolling back to older drivers? definitely something on your system thats doing it as that has not changed. However we should not worry too much as remember BF3 has not been out long and patches will no doubt come soon fixing a load of things.

So I fixed it, and now feel incredibly stupid. I even reformatted trying to fix this.

Turns out it was the Color Pixel Format was set to YCbCr 4:4:4 instead of RGB 4:4:4 in the driver settings.

Give yourself a break - that's an understandable setting to miss - I’ve overlooked far more obvious things in my time (forest and trees spring to mind).

Was it defaulting to YCbCr automatically or did you select it by accident when inputting your own preferences?

That's funny, mine had defaulted toYCbCr too.
Changed it now, the game does look different, darker perhaps.
Not sure if it looks better or not!

Why should that affect the game's graphic settings?

I always use YCbCr as it's correct for BD's and looks better on my projector (in terms of white and black level calibration). I don't have an issue with the graphics in BF3 either.

I don't know but I can tell you it made a world of difference. I am using a LG E2770
