Somewhere in the middle.
Xbox360 has been out around 6 years now and PS3 not much less.

I donated my 360 to my nephew a while back after completing most games that interested me.

I know that games still look and play decent on the current consoles but how long is the damn cycle on these things? Is it gonna be 10 years?

Adding Move and Kinect is just milking every last drop out of the current hardware and its really beginning to bore the life out of me.

Anyone else craving the next installment?!

I'm not bothered about it because I'm not really too fussed about graphics these day, if I were I would have stuck with PCs. What I see on consoles is fine for me.

I think the next generation will only really see games looking as good as today's high end PCs with the addition of 3D, the new ground will be broken with control/interaction methods (again) but I don't think we will see a new Xbox or Playstation until 2013. Then we start the cycle of developers struggling to learn to develop for the new hardware and the crappy ports and sub standard frame rates cycle starts over again...

I'd say late 2012/early-mid 2013. And it wouldnt surprise me if GTAV was a launch title for it. lol

It would surprise me. Why would they bother developing an entire game in an engine for the current generation of consoles only to put it on the next generation of console? That comment doesn't make any sense at all. :p

Well, if windows 8 can actually play 360 games, as the rumours say, then it looks as though they are preparing to replace it.

This generation will last longer than any other generation in the past, reason being?

It has the biggest player base and generates the most amount of revenue that the game industry ever has done.

If we really look at it, what are we missing from this generation?
We now have well structured online play, voice communications, social services, film rentals, tv channels, High-Definition, Wireless Internet, fully body interaction games.

There is no big leap to be had anymore like there was in the past. The only real push would be graphics and Publishers are quite happy to continue developing games on current platforms because the profits are good.

Xbox world podcast have some good points on the need for next gen.

Personally I'm happy with how it is at the moment, sure more power might help but a new console with new programming architecture will require time for developers to get up to speed. Just look at the PS3

They will be working on the next consoles, MS can release one at any time, way the economy is going I can see it being 2013 with the Sony releasing something in 2014.

E3 2012 will be the biggy, they could surprise us with Xmas 2012 release but I doubt it .

New rumours today that it [Xbox] is going to be announced at CES 2012 with a release that year to bosh Nintendo Wii-U into submission.

The economy can't bear a new generation at the moment.

Exactly, it costs too much now to put money into developing a new console every five years. Those days are gone and we cant expect this anymore.

Game developers are in the same boat too, look at how many companies develop one or two games and they have gone bust or laid employees off. Especially now when all developers have finally gotten used to building games for a current HD consoles. Releasing a new console now will kill some of them, another new technology they have to spend time and money making games for.

I'm happy with how the games look on current gen consoles, they are fine. So we may need full 1080 games and proper anti analysing but to be honest a lot of gamers cant tell the different unless you put them side by side or even care.

Whenever Sony and MS release their next consoles don't expect the graphical leap to be big like it was from 16bit to 32bit era.

Option a) Release a multiplatform game on existing known hardware with an install base of over 100 million consoles

Option b) Release game on one console with a userbase that'll probably be under 5 million.

That's excluding the fact that Rockstar have ALWAYS aimed for a sub 12 month gap between the initial tease and the release. So unless the next generation starts in November 2012 and whoever starts it has paid Rockstar an absolute **** ton of money, GTA5 will be on PS3 and X360.

I'm happy with consoles as they are. As has already been said, if I was all that bothered about graphics I would still be spending £400 a year on a new graphics card.
I really doubt that GTA 5 is going to be a launch title, it would be financial suicide for Rockstar because a small percentage of current gen owners will adopt next gen early. I'm sure everone here would but the average gamer won't. In fact if the prices are sky high then it could be a long time before the bggest percentage of consumers have gone next gen. This misses out on a huge chunk of market for Rockstar. With this in mind it's bound to come out on the current gen.

AGREED.... development of a new console never stops, there will always be a project on the go, stopping for even a week and youre giving the competition an edge. I think the next gen xbox will over lap the 360s life span just like PS3 did with the PS2. There is a good reason for this, Console makers often sell the hardware at a lost and make it up with the profits from software sales so it will not alienate those who cant buy the new console for its big release games, say for a speculative example GTAV. I think you are right though and everyone should start looking at 2013/14

Agreed.... there may be a "look what youre getting next" from Sony and Microsoft. There is a possibility of a Wii2 making an appearance for pretty much instant release but nothing else
