Surely the "next generation" must be due?

the way I see it, Kinect was virtually a new console release for MS anyway, so I don't see them in any rush to bring out the next console yet. The Wii seems to have died after it's first couple of years (relatively speaking), the occasional amazing game, but they don't have the demographic that xbox has where it constantly pushes out popular titles in one genre or another; I don't see the WII U bothering MS too much for this exact reason, technology is one thing, but the games are the life blood of consoles. I think MS will wait until sony starts rumblig about announcing a new console then guzump them as much as possible with a similar announcement. But what do I know :P

you are joking right? have you seen the sales figures for the wii and its best selling games compared to the xbox and ps3?
I think the new wii will be just a popular especially with backwards compatibility.

I must admit that I haven't seen sales figures, I formed my opinion on all the people I know where most have a Wii which hasn't seen the light of day for a long time really, are you referring to international sales? I'm not saying the Wii will not be popular, I just don't think that MS considers it as much a competitor than in the early days of the Wii/360/PS3, i.e. I don't thinnk an announcemnt of the Wii U will particularly cause MS to speed up an announcemnt of the new xbox, rather MS will wait and see what sony are planning to do.

Not too bothered. I love my 360 and my PS3. Games look great, sound is great and the selection of games that I buy rarely play poorly - and if they do that's hardly the consoles fault. I am happy with things the way they are atm.

Also whilst I do get excited by new hardware I hate it when I have to wait for the slow trickle of decent games to come out. The back catalogue of games we have on our current consoles is immense.

same here Plainsong, I'm more than happy with my 360, and i've just picked up a PS3 so i've got a whole load of games to look forward to on that too. Topshot, I'm no Nintendo hater, the game i've been looking forward to most this year is Zelda (8 days to go!) :)

indeed, zelda will be awesome and no doubt a huge seller. Nintendo may not have the game catalogue of the others but its big titles certainly dwarf the other platforms.

Im in no rush for new consoles either, the list of games i want that are out/coming out is growing rapidly, just not enough time :(

I hope it's at least a couple of years. I'm about 90% sure I'll pre-order whichever console gets released first. I still maintain that if they released a new console and the main difference was 1080p 60fps with AA, the average man on the street would say it looks no different.

I've played games for a long time and I think this is one of the best ever times for gaming. You can buy an xbox 250gb for £155 or a PS3 slim for £170-230 and there are more AAA titles than I can ever remember. Also, the cost of games is so cheap. The amount of AAA 2-3 month old games that can be bought new for £12-£20 is almost too good to be true. The userbase is huge. Loads of people from all walks of life seem to have an Xbox 360 or a PS3. Whilst having a more powerful console would have its obvious advantages, it's going to be hard to draw a line and start again.

I think the WiiU could potentially have an issue with the wider public but only through anecdotal evidence. I know 4 people with a Wii of which I am 1. None of those Wiis have been turned on in over 8 months and none of the owners are people who buy things like Mario, Zelda or Pokemon.

On that basis why would I of those other 3 people buy a WiiU? Any 3rd party games will still be multi plat, the next xbox and PS will almost certainly have more power and better online, and you just don't replace something that you don't use. My sample isn't large, but I bet there are plenty of others who know people who bought one, used it for a month or two and then stopped.

I think some people are going to see the WiiU in the shop, remember that they barely used the Wii and just not bother.

I'm still sure it'll sell well but I don't see them knocking it out of the park like they did with the Wii launch.

To be honest, I think it will take more than just a graphics upgrade to sell a new console. Look at the PS2 compared to the PS3 and ignore graphics for a second. The PS3 added wireless controllers out of the box, a hardrive, a full online service, game updates and console updates, proper support for big HDTVs. Last gen look pretty bad on a 42" so it was something that was needed. And a blu-ray drive. That's quite a bit of an upgrade. I'd say that the next console will need to have full 3D support. Remember that if they get released in 2014 which seems the most popular guess, they will be in use well into the 2020s. There isn't really a standard for 3DTV just yet and it's possible that once a standard is reached, it will be completely incompatable with any 3DTV released so far. I'd also say that Sony/MS are keeping a keen eye on broadband speeds with a view to an online only console. Imagine being able to download any game in an hour and play it for free for an hour then having the option to delete or buy/unlock. Imagine being able to pay to have an additional hour without buying the game. If someone at work asked you to play a game online that evening, you would never have to say that you don't own that game. You can have your free hour and, if you want, pay for an extra hour. If then you decide that you want to buy/unlock the game, you get the hour refunded. Imagine if you had the option to pay a monthly subscription and have full access to all games whenever you want. It works for Sky and it's the same thing in many ways. It's a box that goes under your TV from an entertainment company that wants your money and you also want the product.

Aye, mame, good post. Valve's Gabe Newell is always babbling on about the hardware being less important now and the services being the most important.

i could say the same about the people who i know play mario, zelda etc and use their wii. If so many are unused how come games sales are still so high on their big titles? and how come their games still command full retail price over a year after launch if they are not selling?
You cant say the majority of wiis are unused when games sales on big titles dwarf the other platforms.
My gaming is 60-40 in favour of the xbox but thats only due to online gaming.

All the people I know with Wiis have all been bought by their parents for the family. Unless the next generation Nintendo console brings something just as revolutionary as the motion controls were when the original Wii came out I can see a large portion of the market being happy with what they already have.

I think the Wiis success was a one off. I can't see them doing it all over again with a next generation console.

HD gaming and the ability to play games on the handheld controller without hogging the tv could be big plus points.

If people bought the Wii over Microsofts and Sonys offerings in the first place I think the last thing they will care about with next gen is HD gaming ;)

Although personally I would love to see a Nintendo console keeping pace with Xbox and PS graphics.
