40+40x0+1 =

Which part? All of what I said are true. If i did I apologise.

If you are arguing because you think I am belittling you, it still doesn't change the fact that you are wrong.

The 2 things are irrelevant and independent of each other.

Because you are belittling me. I was never taught this. Ever. Yet you still take the ****

You're wrong though.

No if's not butts or any other sort of arguement.

In the absence of brackets, you do not just go from left to right, you apply the rules according to order of operations.

Brackets
Orders (Indices)
Division
Multiplication
Addition
Subtraction

So as there are no brackets, no orders and no division, the first operator you use is the multiplication (40x0), then the addition.

You do, 40 x 0 = 0. Then move on to the addition, which is 40 + 0 + 1 = 41.

I was taught this at school in the United Kingdom too.

Well it wasn't - get over it.

Whilst I don't want to wade into the whole "you're stupid" for not knowing it etc I would say that I was taught this at primary school. There is the possibility you will have forgotten this over the years if you were taught then which isn't unreasonable. I know for certain I don't remember everything from then.

Just playing devil's advocate, but not wanting to be insulting about it! :D

I have never been taught this BODMAS thing - you have constantly said that "you can't believe how thick some people are for not understanding (in your opinion) basic mathematics, and anyone that can't understand the equation 40+40x0+1=41 is a retard, as it is basic maths".

I honestly have never been taught this - ever.

I will admit that putting 'fact' at the end of my earlier post was a bit silly.

I can understand perhaps not being taught it in terms of the little BODMAS thing but surely you had to learn these rules at some point, as they are the basic underpinnings of algebra, without them you can't really progress any further than long division and percentages?

When? What year? Ta :)

Everything I done had brackets round it. I genuinely never done it without the brackets.

It goes so far beyond just a few brackets though, you use it everywhere in algebra, even when brackets are present, otherwise every equation you see would be about 40 brackets for 6 numbers and a few operators :p

It's not just about doing sums with no brackets in, that's just the obvious way of highlighting the confusion in cases like this.

Why is the ''rule'' quoted as being BIDMAS/BODMAS? Can't you weirdos agree? Too busy playing with yourselves and not out getting fresh air I should warrant :o:)
