40+40x0+1 =

I ended up with the answer being 1 as I did it in order left to right

I do not remember being taught anything about Bodmas :D

Are there posters in here who actually say it is wrong or are just saying they weren't taught it?

I imagine I'm generating a fair bit of ire suggesting that bodmas is redundant in the face of a well written expression... And I'm being fairly bloody minded about that.

It makes you - literally you, davethe11 - look like an imbecile?

I hope not, but nothing I can do about that, doesn't change the fact that it is a convention, and as such may not be strictly adhered to

What?! It is a fundamental rule of mathematics... whatever you want to call it, if you don't adhere to it then you're wrong.

It may not be strictly adhered to hence the confusion that arises from the question but that is in and of itself a problem - if conventions such as this aren't followed then it becomes much more difficult to ensure that people will interpret maths equations in the same way and therefore arrive at the same answer. Part of the usefulness of maths is that you can apply the same processes and arrive at the same answer as others, if you remove that then it becomes much less useful. That said it's an equation that could (and should) be more clearly written as a good principle is to remove ambiguity where you can.

For what it matters I'd have the answer as 41 because I was taught BODMAS/BOMDAS at school so would put in imaginary brackets to separate like terms i.e. 40+(40*0)+1. I can see why people might interpret it differently but if using the normal conventions 41 should be the answer you come up with.

Well I've been doing year 5 and 6 maths questions related to bodmas online, and I am constantly getting the wrong answers! How embarrassing.

I'm going to persevere and get myself up to the standards of a 15 year old!
