Best petrol engine over the last 50 years??

BMW 4 cylinder.
Served well for years in their road cars. Need I mention the E30 M3. Then in the early 80s was used as the block for their F1 engine, producing upto 1500hp in qualifying spec.
Sounds pretty versatile to me.

Lol what?

Was winner of the "1.8-litre 2.0-litre" category for four consecutive years in the 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 annual competition for International Engine of the Year,
Was placed for four consecutive years in the 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 annual list of Ward's 10 Best Engines

Always rated vauxhalls c20xe 156bhp n/a in a mass produced engine in the mid eighties

Either that or the venerable rover v8 ended up being so versatile in so many differing applications

Then you have to appreciate Hondas Vtec lumps ESP in the s2000 120 bhp/l from a n/a lump is good going

BMW S54b32. 107bhp/l, naturally aspirated, 8,000rpm and economy isn't that shocking either.

Last incarnation of a long line of legendary straight sixes.
