Why do people 'crack' their knuckles?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cracking_joints

Does not cause arthritis, or any of the other myths people think

The sound comes from popping gases.

This.

I do it as a mention thing - a bit like yawning. If someone mentions yawning, I yawn, same with cracking joints (already done it twice reading this topic).

I also like to do it when I'm about to start a large amount of typing or project or something. Basically it feels like I'm loosening up my fingers to start work and stuff :)

Habit, like a Pringle tube, once you pop you cant stop, i just feel like they need to be cracked, my neck does it usually once or twice a day and my back is heaven if someone light-ish stands on it, must get close to 15 cracks in quick succession and i feel as though i can breath again! Im putting it down to the worlds most uncomfortable chair at work!

Feels good brah.

I do it all the time, partly because I know it annoys some people. :p

Corrected the spelling and ***T.

It is just a habit people get into just like any other. Though if someone else cracks their knuckles makes me want to do mine. I can do my the knuckles where fingers join palm and the next set up, as well as my thumb joint by my wrist and the next one up also. Also I can tense up all my fingers with fingers straight and clench fist and cracks my fingers again - yet to find anyone else that can do it though haha.

If anyone does to annoy people, best one is if you can crack you're jaw, sounds so loud :D

When my joints are stiff it helps loosen them up. Not just my knuckles.

My favourite is when I get into bed, and I twist my body so that my spine cracks. God it feels good brah. Makes me all loose and relaxed.

For those of you who say it makes you feel good.... Does it make you feel manly or something? :p

Makes me cringe reading some of the comments here about cracking your back and neck and stuff

No, just makes me feel less tense and more relaxed. I do my neck, back, shoulders, elbows, knuckles, hips, knees and toes. God it's good. Very satisfying.

I have stiff joints (actually, my GP thinks i borderline have early onset arthritis). when i don't crack them my fingers literally stiffen up and i can't type/write/manipulate things properly.

I can crack every joint in my body, as far as i can tell.

This pretty much, I see it as a medical condition. I can't move with full flexibility if I don't have a good crack now and then, and sometimes get a stiff neck or headache if I don't crack my neck too. I wish I was 'normal', and didn't have to do this, and we don't need to suffer persecution from intolerant neighbours as well.

DJMK4, you'd get a good manslap for saying that to my face...

Something that's started later is I can actually click my chest? I like, ribcage where my heart is, that suprised me. Anyone else get this?

It feels good, in the sense that my fingers don't feel right if I need to do it.

Just lately my hips have been cracking. It's really hard work getting them to do it, though. I have to really lean into it.
