*****Official Star Wars: The Old Republic Thread*****

This will probably be a wall of text, ive just woken up so ignore the punctuation and spelling.

Well aftet testing here are my thoughts after playing for pretty much most of Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Gameplay- When i first entered the game i was not impressed, the graphics looked ok but nothing brilliant and the combat seemed very clunky. It looked like it was going to be one of them games that would come out and not impress me at all. I thought let's give this more of a go, seeing as im an MMO veteran and have played pretty much most of the big MMO's 13-14 years.

I started leveling up and as i got higher, i found the game to be getting better. I didn't watch the story lines, as i wanted to save them for release so i just spaced through them all. But i did find the story to be very good from the answers i gave and the replies i got back. I carried on and with leveling with a mate and using comms time flew by and i had finally got to 10 and went Assassin Advanced Class and was pretty much enjoying the game then.

After i'd done that, i started enjoying it much much more. I did the first flashpoint with a friend which albeit was very easy and we did it with 2 of us and companions was very good. It got a bit hairy at times but overall with a Assassin/Sorcerer duo it was good fun. I've heard it was just one to get you into Flash Points, but the higher level ones require a proper group and be harder which i hope is true.

In the end i had the following;

Sith Assassin Level 18 I loved this and this will be my main.
Sith Marauder Level 11 It was ok, but didn't enjoy this after playing the Sin.
Sith Sorcerer Level 13 Really enjoyed this and will probably be my alt.
Bounty Hunter Level 8 It was ok, but it had no lightsaber!

PvP - I really enjoyed this and felt the Assassin as a melee character coped well with what the class is given. I did find that Range ruled the battleground though and even the ones in full heavy armour that took the least amount of damage still did damage that matched mine while i could do similar if not higher but had to be behind the target where as the damage they did was from anywhere.

I also found Sages to be incredibly hard to kill, if it was a bad one i'd still struggle but kill them whereas a good one i'd probably only win 10% of the time as they would heal through my damage and smash me into the ground at the same time with really good damage considering they can heal.

I played all three battlegrounds but really only disliked the Void Star one as i think it heavily favours ranged. It takes to long to respawn when defending due to the spawn door being shielded and to long to plant the bomb especially if the other team is full of ranged as you could be 9 seconds in and get hit from a ranged thats just turned the corner with his long range. If you come up against a good team, i doubt you'll even break through the first set of doors by the time the round ends and if you do then you probably won't get any further.

I really enjoyed the others and thought Huttonball(sp?) was really good and with two competant teams would be amazingly good fun and very intense.

Beta Comments - I thought it was one of the better beta's that i've played in the last 4-5 years and albeit had bugs, it's overall gameplay and the way it was run was excellent. I did have a few problems with bugs, that kept popping up mainly these;

1. Running as if auto run was on, but not being able to stop.
2. Loosing all markers on the map and having to relog or move into a new area to refresh the map.
3. Not being able to click on the UI and having to relog.
4. Not being able to loot bodies, but found out using Seethe or whatever the self heal is stops it and enables you to loot again.
5. The one i had most problems with and might be my side, but having my view shoot up looking into the air at critical moments in PVP/PVE and also when moving around. It's kind of like having a mouse with high sensitivity and knocking your mouse forwards and the view shooting up, but i've never had that in any other game i've played.

Conclusion - I am defiantly keeping my pre-order and playing Assassin come release. I did enjoy the other classes i played, but overall had more fun with the above.

In the end the graphics grew on me and now i quite like the style of the game and the clunkyness i reported went away and it seems a lot more fluid animation wise and everything else.

Now i can't wait for headstart and really want the game to be out now and with a few bug fixes this will be a very good game. It will not surpass WoW as lets be honest it's been out for 7+ years and has a great following but i think it will be the biggest MMO since WoW and probably be the most played after.

Was playing Consular (went Shadow path) and was finding myself getting a little bored.

Tried Jedi Knight for a change and WOW! So much more fun! Combat is quicker, more engaging and feel less like i'm spamming one key.

Force dive in, stun the beggars and start laying about with the lightsaber and its a lot more fun, think I have found my class for launch :D

Thouroughly enjoying the beta! Hoping I have some time to play tonight, it fnishes tommorow, right?

Only had time to play as a Jedi Knight (Sentinel) which I liken to a cross between warrior/rogue from WoW. They absolutely dominate in PvP, shall definitely be making this my first character.

Pre-ordering tonight!

I only played 3 chars to level 10 but from that limited game time it is a must buy, well I have purchased it already but that's not the point :)

One thing: Does the voice acting/cut-scene quest giving approach continue throughout the game?

Yes the entire game - and they have voice actors on long contracts for additional content

I enjoyed the weekend, but tbh it only confirms that I don't think this game is for me. I had a lot of problems with targetting as melee, which is NOT what I expected.. Game would not auto-target, or even [Tab] to next target.. which when you are melee is tres important.

I also had a couple of problems being stuck on objects which really wasn't helpful as the game forces you to suck a death to escape.

Also some spawn camping and kill-stealing.

But as I've mentioned before, lack of a lifetime option is what kills this for me.

I don't understand the lifetime arguement at all, which new MMO's have this? I don't recall any newer one having it to start with, even WoW only has a yearly subscription and no life time and that's been around for 7+ years.

Age of conan, STO, CO are a few i can think of that had the option right from the start. I'm sure there will have been more.

Age of Conan had it from the very start? Nope it didn't. There was no reason for them to have one as the game had only just come out, it's normally used for under achieving games that are struggling for subs.

I doubt SWTOR will have it at all, unless it begins to struggle sub wise as in the long run they would be loosing out on money.

It's like the people complaining that £8.99 a month is way to much, when most other MMO's either cost the same or more. If you play it for a few hours everyday for a month, then you can already justify the cost.

Tab targetting worked just fine for me. Played as Smuggler/BH/Consular.

Also, /stuck command gets you out of environment glitches.

spawn camping/Kill stealing is a "people" problem, although the respawn rate on some quest mobs on coruscant was too long ill admit.

Anyway, sounds as though you didnt like the game regardless. Guess now you know for sure its not for you. :D

Same. Had no issues with this at all apart from the normal "it targeetz the wrong personz and I DIEEEEZZZZ!!!!" annoyance (the stupid accent is from an old polish wow friend from my old guild who screamed this down vent once :D:D:D disrupted the raid for a good quarter of an hour while everyone laughed at him :D)

Tab targeting is a little annoying for me. It seems to pick whatever's closest to you, not whatever is closest to you in your current field of view which I think is how Warcraft works. Being so used to that style, it's proving difficult to get use to SWTOR's.

Thanks for providing that, good read. I didnt get to play as much as you (friday night & sunday only) but I did get a very good feel for the game and agree with pretty much all of your comments.

I was also affected by the map bug, and looting bug. I think there is a command for reloading the UI, but unfortunately I didnt know it and was forced to log out to fix them.

Small complaints though - especially for a beta.

Overall I thought the game was brilliant and Ive pre-ordered from OCUK this morning.

I tried Smuggler(Scoundrel), BH, Consular & Trooper. Smuggler was my favorite and will be my main come release. Loved the cover mechanic and I actually felt naked without it on the trooper and BH :p

One gripe I do need to mention is the skills progression didnt seem to make any sense. I was getting abilities at levels where they didnt seem useful. Stuff like blaster whip is pretty useless until you get the talents that make it good.

On a related note, the playstyle change from Smuggler to Scoundrel at level 10 was incredibly drastic, it was like playing a new class altogether. Suddenly I was not using cover any more at all. Quite enjoyed it anyway, Backblast ***.

2. Loosing all markers on the map and having to relog or move into a new area to refresh the map.

If you zoom out on the map ie to see diffent areas then it sorts this issue too, was annoying me until i found that.

My majoy annoyance is the camera distance doesnt stay zoomed out so i constantly have to zoom out.. Anyone know a solution for that would be great

Perhaps i'm remembering wrong with AoC but at the end of the day does it really matter? There's no reason to care one way or the other what payment options they have that other people may or may not consider.

It's all good, i am not looking for an arguement i just am trying to understand why it's a big problem.

I mentioned in my previous post, they are normally brought in when a game is in decline and loosing subs faster than they are getting them. If they were to bring them out from the start of a new MMO they would be shooting themselves in the foot considering what they would earn long term.

Maybe a year or two down the line, if the game is still being played they might bring something out like it to drive the subs up. I just don't understand how not having a lifetime sub from the start of a game, makes it any less desirable.

There was a link on the login screen listing a lot of the current bugs and work-a-rounds.

Not being able to loot - Sit down (x) stand up and then loot.

Map not displaying - relog.

Nice to know they are aware and probably working on a fixes as we speak.

Think i'll be going either Sith or Human Inquisitor. Would you guys recommend Assassin or Sorcerer?

Sorcerer sounds like a Warlock from WoW, lot's of damage over time etc.

Sorcerer has both direct damage and damage over time trees, so you can be either. Assassin and Sorcerer are vastly different though it really depends how you want to play. Sorcerer is obviously the range damage class, and also the healing class. Assassin is either the tank or the melee DPS and has stealth. Both are excellent by the way, from my experience/point of view at least
