Anyone think The Beatles are overrated?

It's easy to underestimate just how different the world was 50 years ago. Now, with so much music produced in the years since, there are many incredible bands and influential songs.

But most bands are only famous for one or two tunes among the wider public... if that. The Beatles, however, may well be the most recognisable band ever. Not just because they've been around forever, but because so many of their songs strike a very memorable chord.

I won't defend all their stuff, and I've never bought a Beatles track or album in my life, but nobody sane can argue that they haven't been both influential and popular for good reason.

Now the Rolling Stones, there's an overrated band. :-)

not a massive fan. i often wonder what the modern day equivalent of the beatles is and think of jls.

noel gallagher has written some great stuff. however, i have listened to a lot of oasis recently and have come to the conclusion that not only is his guitar playing awful, the tone ruins the songs.

I think they are a bit over rated imo there are plenty other bands singer/song writers that were around at the time that probably were just as influential. I just think they were the top of the tree of some very good musicians at the time so get all the credit.

I'd go and search for group based singer/songwriters around the 62/63 period and see what was on offer.
If it wasn't for The Beatles The Rolling Stones might never have made it.
Oh and of course we've then got the knock on effect of guitar based bands becoming popular because of them.

Hang on a minute, you equate the Beatles (one of the most influential bands ever) to Jls ???

Are you on crack ? :o

Try and listen to the songs that arent "Yellow Submarine" or "I Want To Hold Your Hand" (more to do with the era at the time) They have made some amazing rock songs that any credible rock artists would have loved to make.

To say thay are the equivalent of a manufactured music band like JLS who dont even write music is just an insult. Its like saying Led Zep are basically like Mcfly!

I find the Beetles boring and in fact have developed a hatred for them. I live in Liverpool, and it seems like Liverpool as a city is completely obsessed with the Beetles and refused to get over them, so I often see or hear references to them as if they were in their prime or something.

It gets boring, even more so when I can't/don't understand the huge fuss that's made over them especially in the case of Liverpool as a city where it's had a load of other things to go on about as much yet they still go on about the Beetles (I'm talking about things like South Parkway train station where there's a bush out side it that is shaped like the Beetles, or John Lennon airport to name some).

Beatles... it's a pun :p

Problem with this question is the same as it always is:

-How can you measure the 'ratedness' of the thing in question? (band in this case)
-How can you measure the 'true quality' of the thing in question?
-How can you balance these two factors off against each other?

I mean, for someone like The Beatles, it is pretty much inevitable that they will be considered overrated by a sizeable number of people. Not because they weren't a good band, but simply because they are SO highly rated by millions that simply being a 'good' band may not be good enough; essentially anything short of 'completely amazing' makes them overrated.

My gut feeling is that most supergroups are probably 'overrated', including the Beatles, but I still think they are a great band.

As for the comparisons with Oasis lyrics I'm not convinced. You cite Champagne Supernova but is that really lyrically superior to the Beatles? Bear in mind I'm a big Oasis fan, they were my favourite band for over 10 years, I've seen them live more than any other band and I've probably listened to their songs more than any other artist. Fantastic melodies but lyrically inconsistent in my book.

Some would argue that guitar based bands and rock music was influenced through Blues and "black" music. Personally, I do think the influence the Beetles had is often exaggerated quite a lot.
