as much as i like dogs, i would never attempt this. read way too many stories of the person drowning and the dog surviving. even if the chances of the dog surviving are slim, i still wouldn't risk it and i'm a fairly strong swimmer.

Several reports of this every winter.
Dog near ice, should be on lead, if not, let it win a darwin.
