new business

Advertise via overclockers of course...... Joke.

Shall use social networking sits and probably Groupon (I've been looking into their pricing structure).

As for why people would by from me.... I'd rather wait till the site is up and running before telling you this.

Sorry but that is an incredibly noobish answer. Trust me on this: Unless you have an absolutely killer product, you WILL need SEO expertise and / or adwords.

Google adwords or advertising on Facebook is a no-brainer.
The costs to reward ratio is pretty good.

As this is a start up though, with low initial funding, he will first use the cheapest (and free) methods of advertising and when he needs to kick it up a notch, he start using paid ads on the search engines (don't forget Microsoft advertising, which includes Bing).

A lot depends on what he can afford and if budgets will allow.

The free advertising methods is a good starting place though.

Google Adwords - no-brainer? certainly not!

As I said: Trust me (Speaking from experience): setting up a 'facebook group' and trying to drum up business using that is not going to get you much business.

Groupon is not 'free advertising' and I am yet to be convinced of how beneficial it is as it attracts a lot of 'bargain hunters', not repeat buyers.

I am talking about SEO, not just advertising on Google/ Bing.

OP needs to have a marketing budget or he is going to end up going nowhere fast!

Quite easy to see who does own a business on here and who doesn't.

agree to this 100%

Just to clarify...when I said "no brainer", it means..."of course - do it".

I shall be more explicit:
I myself, advertise on google and bing. The cost is low and possible website clicks to be gained from this are good.

This is my opinion. I have experience first hand.

I've also seen another business who advertised on google and gained very little from it.

I whole heartedly advise anyone to at least try advertise on facebook, google and bing, before they give up (if the costs: reward ratio is too high).

I also stand by my original advice and that is to start with the free advertising methods, before beginning the paid for advertising campaigns.

People have to understand that startups in general, don't have much money to play around with. It's all very well people advising startups to spend big on advertising and SEO services, but if there is no money in the bank...who is going to pay for this?

Amusing given this evenings thread :p

I so wish I hadn't created that thread. Anyway....... I digress. Let me try and move on.

Very true. I have to admit that I haven't taken advertising as seriously as I shouldve been. I done a lot more reading over the weekend. I also checked out Google's adword service.

Surely this is no longer a good idea if she is thinking of dumping you?

We'll be fine.

I am of the opinion this is absolutely doomed to failure. A new business is hard enough as it is without a dead relationship in the middle of it.

A shame we didn't realise it was all some attention seeking joke before we wasted time with constructive advice.

You only ever seem to voice negative opinions.... Why is this?

You had a go at me earlier with regards to my plans... I asked that offer some more constructive advice and then you vanished.

Now you're back again. I guess I should blame myself for that so I'll try not to have a go at you.

Let it be known that this is no attention seeking campaign. This is being taken very seriously. However, should you feel it is all some big attempt to draw in attention then please by all means ignore this thread. Do not feel obliged to give advice.

I'm grateful for all the input so far.

A dead relationship is awesome for a business startup as a) there are fewer distractions and b) you can devote more time to it.

Fox absolutely loves peeing on people's chips when they come in here asking about business. You'll encounter many more like him, I wouldn't be overly concerned by it.

Ordinarily I would agree but in this case his business partner is his girlfriend and some of the threads he/her posted this weekend were just bizarre.

If he was going it alone I would agree. Infact perhaps this is prudent advice - consider doing this by yourself.

I'd like to know when (and in whig thread) I said my girlfriend was also my partner in this venture?

I don't recall mentioning who my partner was... Perhaps I did..... Please post quote.

DAIR, I would urge you to look at big commerce (www.bigcommerce.com) its what I use to host my webstore, it all integrates and optimises for google, I opened the store on the 15th of November, its $39.95 a month to host with them.

Gross profit in the last month has been just under £8000 for web sales.

I had a bespoke store for two years previously and only sold about £3 grand on it in the whole time.

In your first post you say 'My partner and I are looking into starting a business'. This was taken by everyone to mean your girlfriend/wife/whatever rather than a business partner (As if its a mate surely its 'my mate and I are' until you have formed a business at which point he becomes a partner in it with you).

It does however give you scope to retrospectively change your mind and decide your mate is your partner and we can't prove otherwise, mind :p

Robbie G is correct in that I tend to play the risk averse side in threads like this. But I feel this adds important balance to the debate, if you can read the negative sentiment and examples of where there are issues and still, after that, feel the business is viable then thats a good thing. The statistics speak for themselves - its not easy and the odds are stacked against you. That doesnt mean you cannot overcome them - but you need to do a LOT of research and declaring plans to use Advertising Stream X without knowing the costs involved means there is much much more to be done before you progress beyond the planning stage.
