Is evolution a religion?

I'd be interested to see the last time a religious person started one of these debates. I'm inclined to believe we keep ourselves to ourselves until provoked.

It's usually just one or two posters, seems the large majority of people on here are of no faith being agnostic or atheist though, so it would be expected there are more threads by people of no faith.

100% correct. I remember the last time I gave my opinion in a religious thread. Did not end well for me. (was drunk at the time)

Never going to get involved in one again.

This probably isn't going to end well.

Facts are as follows:

Evolution is the Scientific Theory that all living species are the related descendants of earlier species and that we all ultimately share a common ancestor and that this is driven by a mechanism called Natural Selection

It is not by definition a Religion as where Religion seeks to answer questions of Why, Evolution only seeks to answer questions of How. Neither is in direct competition with the other and can, depending on the individual and their particular interpretation of their particular belief system, complement each other.

So no, Evolution is not a Religion because it doesn't address the why of existence, just as Religion is not an explanation of the how of life on Earth......each is separate, with separate objectives and separate questions......

In a way, but in another, somewhat more accurate way the 'theory' of Evolution got rid of the need for religion.

And a lot of religions do try to explain how life arose...

How sure is "religious believer X" that God makes the sun rise?

Don't try and deny that some have a blind faith in science - it's impossible to defend, because many DO have a blind faith in it. They don't know the facts, evidence, nor even the methods of testing, but because it's "SCIENCE!!2" it "must be true!"

Now swap "SCIENCE!!2" with "Religion". Pot, black, etc.

Most people don't have blind faith in science, most people assume that very provable scientific theories are correct, these people will also in reaction to seeing new proof that disproves a theory, stop assuming that theory is correct and look for a new theory that explains everything they've SEEN and found proof of to that point.

That is where religious believers, and scientific "believers" differ. Science is based on testing theories and finding proof, there isn't blind faith, its merely going with the best theory to that point. Religious followers, ignore ALL proof, they believe with no proof of ANYTHING at all, when they want to change how they "believe" something, they rewrite their bible and pretend the old one was just translated by hippies and their new translation is fact, its all pretty laughable.

I think the proof of mavity and evolution is substantial enough to accept them as fact, if new proof came out, I wouldn't ignore it.

The whole point of religion is to BELIEVE with no proof, the whole point of science is to test every belief and prove it true or false. Couldn't be more different.

None of that is especially accurate, but I'm too busy running a bath to reply in more detail right now.

If Evolution is a religion, then there must be a big bang religion - and that sounds terrible. Evolution is theory based on scientific evidence, I wouldn't call it religion.

Evolution is far from fact.

The big bang theory is ridiculous.

Science should be about solid undeniable facts, until then its just someone's opinion.

I would say some science has become a religion, with believers fervently defending without the slightest inkling.

I like you!

Nothing in science is undeniable. That's supposed to be the whole point of it. Science is - and I'm deliberately picking my words to be inflammatory - always about the best guess.

Looks like they don't have very good schools in Yorkshire :p

Actually I'm from Bradford, and it has a couple of good schools (I went to the best one there, and was in the top science class :D).

But most other schools here are terribad.
