"I am not in any way saying that to have another faith - or no faith - is somehow wrong." - You little liar, what did you say then? We're not wrong (so... we're right), but we're less moral, less tolerant, less British and responsible for a decline in values? What an idiot.

Why is this [explicit] in charge, again? Hitch is dead, it's safe to come out now? Low.

/rant... actually, far from it but you know ;)

Oh why can't these threads be banned from GD

And placed in Speakers corner.

No offence OP, but GD isn't the place.

Yes, because this is just as equally a non-event. Oh, wait :p

I'd prefer he uses Windows. Easier to hack ;)

Sorry i coudlnt resist ;) But I digress...

I dont think it is incorrect to call Britain a Christain country. Christianity was still the dominant faith last time the Census was taken IIRC. Probably a few more Jedis than before but Christianity still topped the polls.

Not sure how you can be both comitted and yet vaguely practising though. It buggs me that Cameron is still trying to be all things to all people. I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth but im just your everyday working class kinda guy. Religion? Sure when it helps me make a point and connect with my people. At least Blair was up front about his beliefs. Admitedly he wasnt up front about a lot of other things but religion... yeap!

Anyhoo im out before the Racist Anti Religion crew gets here :(

Actually, didn't Blair only convert to Catholicism after he left office?

What i have a problem with about what he said isn't about Britain being a Christian country (although i don't think it should be and i'm pretty certain that a majority of the population aren't actually religious), which is technically true. What i have a problem with is him being such an idiot that it's painful, which is bad enough for a human being but i mean, come on, the guy's in the driving seat.

Nobody who's capable of putting themselves in a position of power should be allowed to.

In modern history the UK has been and is as a Christian country. Even though I’m not Christian but i have no problems with this.

One point i would like to make is maybe society would improve if the UK went back to its Christian heritage. The farther this country has gotten from religion the worse society has got. Atheism is the largest it has ever been in modern history and the state society is now in correlates.

All you see these days is scantily clad women, drug use, and disrespect of elders etc , which good Christian values would help eradicate.

Blair did convert to Catholicism after he left office but before that was a practicing Anglican I think.

Cant disagree that Cameron has come across as complete pratt of late. Mind you when the alternatives are Andy Pandy's meeker brother or Wallace and Grommets ******* lovechild we diddnt really have any other option but to not vote Cameron into power.

Wait.... what?

fidelity in marriage: "Whom God has joined together let no man put asunder"

renunciation of worldly goods: "Gather not your riches up upon this earth, for there your heart will be also",

renunciation of violence: "If a man strikes you on one cheek, turn the other cheek",

forgiveness of sins: "Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us",

unconditional love: "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you".

What is wrong with the above. I think these values should be pushed hard, taught in schools. They are beautiful when you look into them.

Dont know about evil. Slimey, yes. Inept, probably. But evil is maybe a bit strong.

Dont disagree with everything Cameronsays or is trying to do, Christian values or many other religious values for that matter are a good guide to how a society might want to conduct itself.

Unfortunately all we have had is the BIG society spiel which as far as I can tell was encouraging me to sit down with my neighbours and eat Kellogs cornflakes in the street. I dont even like cornflakes!

A very wise man who passed away recently once said that human decency is not derived from religion. It precedes it.

Hmm I found him a bit too argumentative and agressive to consider him wise but meh. Suum cuique.

I know a lot of thoroughly decent human beings who are not religious. Equally I know of a lot of thoroughly indecent human beings who are devoutly religious.

What might seem common deceny to one would seem to be religious values to another. No matter how you label them they are still good guidelines to live by, no?

Well no, we are able to judge morals for ourselves. If anything religion is detrimental to that fact.

The bible can't be a good moral code or else we wouldn't have to trim out or gloss over all the bits we don't agree with, would we?
