Drain cover, oil, wall! I think its a write off!!

Unlucky. At 3am this morning I set off on a rescue mission in the GayMobile. Most roads round here were sheet ice, I passed a taxi that had embedded itself in a bush (30mph road). How I didn't hit anything I have no idea as I did about 30 miles all told after rescuing my friend in a distant town, going to McDonalds for a drift & brew through the drive through at 4am then realising I needed fuel and ended up leaving my wallet on the pump when I got back so I had to head back out when a kind gentleman pretended he wasn't gonna nick it really and handed it to me.

Gently dropping from 3rd to second had the back end stepping out but I enjoyed every minute of it to be honest. Weird feeling driving on ice for miles on end, felt like had flat tyres or something. I can see how it's easily done though, one little tweak neither here no there on the throttle or brakes and traction is completely lost.

Unlucky.

May I advice you get some driver training so should this happen again you know how to correctly react. :)

Regarding the cars you've posted, well a Cayman S is a far better car than a 996 era 911.

A 2006 Cayman S has 996 beating performance, far superior handling, is newer, more reliable engine and will depreciate less. Don't buy an old 996 when the same money gets you a newer Cayman which would also be eligible for OPC warranty.
The only advantage the 996 has is a more edgy/thrilling driving experience, but more talent is required. Get a Cayman and make sure it has 111 point inspection done before you part with your cash or buy one with OPC warranty.

This is great advice and when I get the new car I will certainly do just this.

I'm seriously considering the Cayman but am a sucker for cabriolets.

Sorry dude, what I meant is that there was a couple of patches of oil after the drain covers which happened to be perfectly placed so that both rear wheels were on

So there were 2 oil patches directly after 2 drain covers exactly in line with both rear wheels? That's a mighty coincidence, are you sure you didn't just hit a wet, cold, metal drain cover? They're extremely slippery....

Bad luck, at least you're alright.

I've only just been on one of those skid handling courses a week ago and i would seriously mega highly recommend them. Just getting used to the sensation of hitting (simulated) ice and having the back break away was invaluable.

No sorry dude my explanation was pretty bad, The oil may or may not have played a part in the accident as it was in the centre of the road about 10 meters up. The police did put down that their was oil on the road but its significance I don't know.

Were you trying to fix the HU whilst not looking at the road ? :p

Wet drain covers like painted road surfaces should be avoided

Its a tricky one... just been doing some maths and could push the budget a little more if there is something special just out of budget?

Ouch :(

The only time I've ever spun was when I went over a drain cover in standing water braking from ~90 to 30 for a bend. One wheel slid on the cover then gripped while the other just aquaplaned and around I went.

Fortunately it was on Bruntinghthorpe and I managed to just do a 360.

I think I'd take a 996 C4S over a Cayman.

It's only worth it if you must have a 911.

The 997 911 is vastly superior in driving dynamics to the 996 model, vastly better interior, improved reliability and older 996's won't be eligible for warranty and you'd not want to suffer an IMS failure and the resulting 10-13k bill.

So what does this have to do with Cayman? Well the cayman is from the same era as the 997, improved IMS design, far better driving dynamics, better interior and will hold value better along with been eligible for warranty.

Drive a 911 (996) and a Cayman S back to back, to put it simply the Cayman is faster, much improved handling dynamics and a nicer place to be. The advantage of the 996 is it's a 911, the image, more requiring of driver.

Where did you go and how much was it?
