So...When is VAT dropping back down to 17.5%?

Not again... The riots were not about revolution, they were about being a *******..

No...they were voicing their opinions and thoughts,The only way they could really for the government to actually take any notice...if no one does anything about it,Our government will continue to take us for a ride.
i don't think it it will be the last time this will happen.

It'll rise to 22.5% when we need a consumer buy burst whist gdp is low ;)

SUCKERS. The end product price to the consumer has not changed nor has it done so in the past despite the VAT increase.

Because when it was dropped from 17.5 to 15%, it only lasted 1 year

Yes because labour thought they could magically fix the world by somehow spending more whilst earning less, not usually a good way to reduce debt.
So now we're stuck paying for their mistakes, it'll be 20 for a while yet.

Wait till the economy tanks in the new year, retail sector is on its knee, it will be 15% by April

this, they need to realise the VAT rise is more damaging to the economy, the high street is already on its last legs with people spending less and less comparative to last year. I can't see how the tories can effect economic recovery when they are hitting people hard in their pockets in so many directions, its just not going to stimulate growth

I think the tax on fuel is the most notable at the moment, although we've noticed food shopping getting more expensive as well.

The same standard of life is getting expensive :(

Yea, i never figured how increasing the VAT will help stimulate the economy.
Funny that, you make it more expensive and wonder why people dont spend as much.

If it was revolution they'd have marched on Whitehall, not Oxford street.

You could make up an argument that in a capitalist society you make more of an impact when you inconvenience the foundations of capitalism rather than by trying to influence the political leaders directly.

I don't think that's it would be the right way to go about it but it's a potential argument. I'd also be inclined to agree with you that the recent riots had very little to do with making a political statement of any colour, there may be been an initial sense of disquiet for a few who were protesting but very soon it seemed to simply be that people got caught up in the excitement of having a chance to misbehave even where there was no link to a genuine grievance or at least no link to the inciting event.

Rules of tax,

A reduction in tax is only ever temporary
A rise in tax said to be temporary is perminant

How true. If they really wanted it to be "temporary", it should have been an additional 2.5% "GFC tax", which at a later day will stick out like a sore thumb needing to be removed.

By adding it conveniently to VAT, much more innocuous and likely to remain indefinitely

You add it to VAT to make the admin and collection easy. Do you have any idea what it would cost to legislate for and administer a new tax? It's obviously massively simpler to amend one section in one act than to bring in a whole new tax.

If and when the VAT is reduced, the government will increase fuel duty to "offset it" and when the VAT is increased the "offset" will stay and we will be paying 5% (rough idea) at the pumps.

Running a business I used to pay 17.5% less for fuel than MOP(members of public) then it changed and I was only paying 15% less the MOP then it changed again and I'm now paying 20% less for fuel. I'm happy with it staying
