Internet Under Threat (again)

Can you atleast sum up the 21 minute video for those who are in work?

Us government wants to be able to hand over control of DNS to private companies where any site that links to copyrighted material can be taken down without any problem.
America is messed up, it is essentially collapsing right under our eyes. NDAA bill and SOPA are pretty much the early warnings off this collapse.
I am not a conspiracy nutter, but when the government has the power to hold anyone for an unlimited period of time. How can this ever be used for a good cause?
All domains will be shifted over to European registers, it's not really going to do much damage to pirate sites and will just be used to censor independent media.

Seriously crap is going down in America, I would urge anyone to get out of America as quickly as possible.

Should this have gone in the video thread or is it worthy of it's own thread? I'm not watching it at work, especially on my lunch break!

Problem with video's being chucked in the youtube video thread, it doesnt really get discussed and not many people get to see the importance of the situation.

It has it's own thread in SC.

The bill has already had a fair few amendments and is likely to have many more, before being remotely passable by congress.

One of which, you know need a court order to block.

Agreed.
There was a massive reddit thread where they said this:
People in The Netherlands have always looked up to the USA. It won't be long before that stops, I guess. These are stories I read, watched and heard in the mainstream media over here:
your political system is one of the most corrupt systems in the world
your politicians represent companies instead of people
your government will probably censor the internet
your government detains without trial
your government tortures people
your government hires mercenaries
your government does nothing to improve education
your president doesn't have any real influence over what happens
your presidential candidates are stupid beyond belief
your presidential candidates promote stupidity
your presidential candidates are not taking seriously over here
your elections are a joke
your media outlets cannot be trusted
your media outlets focus on distractions instead of main issues
your people are ****ed when they're uninsured
your infrastructure is collapsing
your economy will soon be top 3 instead of #1
your economy will probably collapse a second time
So it's not only Reddit or The Daily Show that is covering these issues. Other countries are watching and passing the popcorn while your country is collapsing. And I think it will get worse, not better. I am 29 years old and looking back at the world's history I don't think the problems above will be solved during my lifetime. It will probably have to get a lot worse before a movement arises that's big enough to demand real change.
Now you'll probably read this, take one small point out of my story and comment on that. That's okay, but please notice the trend of what's going on in your country. Do something about it. We need our big brother to act like role model. Right now he's high as a kite.

There's already a thread on it in SC. Although I don't think it's a SC matter.

TL;DR: This is a bill by MPAA/RIAA lobbyists to allow them to shut down US based websites, or block foreign websites with any copyrighted material, similar to what Iran and China do. Even a website as mainstream as Youtube could be shutdown with these powers, thus the major internet powers are completely against this law.

A friend over in the US states that the media are portraying this bill as an anti-child porn law. It has nothing to do with that, but what ever gets the masses to go along with it I suppose.

There's already a thread in SC, this is really not a GD matter.

Anyway I agree with protecting copyright, but SOPA needs some amendments so that sights that try to comply with copyright laws but sometimes inadvertantly break them (e.g. YouTube) don't get ****ed. IMO it should only really affect sights who's main purpose is to get around copyright e.g. The Pirate Bay.
