6950 2GB vs 6970 2GB

Whats the stock voltage? And would I need to increase voltage to just increase clock speed to 880mhz? Not intending on touchin mem speed

I'll let you into my secret.

When I started overclocking recently I hadn't done so in years. My trick with GPUs was to go to a website like say, XFX. Look at their models.

Look at the clock speeds on the basic model, then the clock and memory speeds on their £80 more expensive same model that has a factory overclock.

With the Lightning it was a different animal, because I had read lots of reviews on that and after glaring lovingly at the 480 Lightning I knew I could push my luck somewhat.

The voltage needed by a 6950 should be lower, but then I haven't spent the evening reading up on 6950 overclocking. Look for reviews of your card, and just skip to the "Overclocking and thermals" bit :D

Just forget about overclocking the GPU.

It won't give you THAT much of a performance increase - just a few more FPS which is not really going to be noticeable in a game.

No no you're right. I wrote an article for a magazine last year which pointed out just that ^

For the most part you are jeopardising your hardware for frames per second that you can't even see. And, if your card has to be overclocked to become acceptable then it's not worth having.

Sure, 25% gains in benchmarks may well look great, but in the real world they offer bugger all. If your card wasn't quick enough before then the chances are that it's not going to be quick enough after.

Of course there's the fun aspect and that "I got something for nothing" mentality, but it's all rather silly.

Now if your name is Smoke and you break world records? I doff my cap. Otherwise I wouldn't bother really.

+1

Don't OC if you're happy with performance

You say that like it's guaranteed.

It isn't.

Some people just don't understand man.

It's like locked CPU cores. 99% of the time they were locked for a reason, but some people just like taking the gamble. They then end up with a crappy unstable CPU they didn't even want.

I guess it's better to understand the methodology of "nothing for nothing" and "getting what you pay for".

I can't even bring myself to think about buying something that based on a risk could end up being totally what I don't want. It's all just too much aggro.

i have a toxic flicked the switch shaders unlocked

then i just upped the core to 880 for a start and then the memory to match the 6970 at stock

mine runs 24/7 @ 900/1375 stock volts. max temp is 65c while gaming idle 35c

should do quite a bit more but why play everything max at my res anyway :)

I would just be content with flicking the switch, installing the card/drivers and play some games first and enjoy it before you start oc'ing it.

It should achieve the 880MHz and 1375MHz but at the same time, nothings a given in regards to oc'ing, unlikely but it may only go to 830MHz and that's it, it's just the luck of the draw.

With my 2 unlocked 6950>70's AC Extremes in CrossFire:

If you leave the memory lower, the core goes higher.

1GHz/[email protected], it goes higher but the memory needs to come down, it only ever gets used at those speeds for the odd BM though.

It sits happy at 950MHz/[email protected] which in CrossFire is more than enough@1080p

I wouldn't advise mucking about with voltages until you look more into it, you wouldn't be the first(or last) guy to have a fancy £200 paperweight sitting around the room.

As they are not reference cards I'd be looking around to see the max voltage that they can handle.

If you do decide to change voltages, make sure you do as ALXAndy advised and manually turn your fan to 100%, then start oc'ing.

Okay Tommy, well I mean, not pushing it past 880/1375 mhz which is 6970 stocks, should I do that? Seems easy, I guess just sliding on Trixx, but I don't want anything higher as I guess I will need to raise the voltage and much around with the dangerous things. So what do you recommend for me?

I'll unlock shaders if possible, think I should put it at 880mhz/1375?

So what do you recommend for me?

Forget about Trixx and Afterburner for now.

Start with copy and pasting the below load of text into notepad and save as

Remove CCC Limits.reg

After you install the driver inc CCC, then reboot, then double click the 'Remove CCC Limits.reg' and press ok, then reboot again.

This way you just use CCC panel and you can't really fry your card as it won't let you overvolt it, just overclock it without the limits.

Manually set your fan to at least 70% in CCC, I would go for the full 100% myself to be sure, until you get a feel for the card and what kind of temps it gives off.

Try 850/1250, if it's fine, try 860/1250, keep going until you get sparklies/artifacts then back down to when it was fine.

Then start upping the memory to 1270 and add 20 each time, same way as you did with the core.

You can run Heaven to test it as Kombustor/Furmark is mental.

Here is the text to make the reg entry:

Okay thanks mate when I have everything in hopes by wed I'll try unlock shaders then start overclockering to 6970 speeds. I'll put Dan speed at 70%. What program can I use to monitor temps and fps ingame?
