Alan Hansen uses racist language on live TV

You might want to read up about apartheid and the way it was used in our own colonial history ;)

That said however I do think this has been blown out of proportion by band wagoneers. Hansen has never given any indication of being racist, the context he has used it in is more to do with a poor understanding of the currently accepted correct words and that is something just about anyone can fall foul of when there is so much focus on an issue.
I'm sure if you go back in history, or to any country you could find terms which have been used offensively somewhere.

In the UK in unaware of it being used specifically as a slur, besides - the current flavour of the month is to blame things on "ethnics" - which in many aspects of society now has a negativity attached to it.

It's now nothing more than a poor descriptive term.

Football does still have problems with racism, but this is hardly an example of racism - for a start there is no negativity in the context spoken.

This is just white liberals making a deal out of nothing, coloured is just a descriptive term, it is not an insult or a demeaning term. In south africa, coloured is an accepted ethnic group, coloured people in cape town are not african and not european, but of a mixed african and european ethnic background. They even have it on the census, coloured. They even call themselves coloureds. If you ask them what race they, they will say that they are coloured.

This political correctness is realy annoying and i don't see what the big deal is if someone calls people black or even more insulting terms, they should get over it. Oh someone was offended, so what.

I call people black that are black all the time, big deal.

I really don't know how Hansen could have completed that sentence without offending anybody.

Anyone care to try? How do you refer to the fact there are lots of black players playing in the premiership with no racism problem at all, without referring to the fact they are black?

Is it 'cause he is #000000? :D

The word "coloured" still carries quite a charge. I think he could have chosen a better word. I don't think he was being racist, though.

People really need to calm down over this issue in fact it isn't even an issue, there are more pressing issues in the world at the moment than a football pundit saying coloured.

The problem here is dramatic over sensitivity. What we need to do is to start using the 'unacceptable' words more often until people stop caring.

It is the context that makes a statement offensive, not the particular noun used.

At uni the editor of the rag-mag (a black guy) was told he couldn't put any jokes about non-white people in the magazine. He just changed every joke in that category to be about himself and was then told he couldn't make jokes about himself - daft.

I still remember being called the racist term for white by a Sikh when I was at school (yes it was many years ago) and the head of year did nothing about it when I reported it to him.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was still the same should it happen now, but if the boot was on the other foot it would be a very different story.

It is such a shame that we as a species fail ourselves on such a basic level.

I have heard my grandfather* and his pub mates use the term 'darkies':p - OK you wouldn't be using words like that on TV etc but I know they aren't racist merely a little misguided.

*This is the same man who after not seeing him for years (only met him 4 or so times in my life) asked me if I had a bomb in my bag when saying hello (non practicing Muslim) :p:D.
