Why do people buy high octane petrol?

I'd hope not - it'd break down rather quickly on unleaded ;)

Plus do they even do a C180 CDI? I thought the smallest one they offered was a C200 CDI.

Genuine curiosity here, not a rant. I notice a lot of you posting that you buy V Power or Super whatever petrol, but I can't see what you gain from it? By my understanding, your engine will either knock with a given fuel or it won't, and all modern petrol road cars are designed with 95 octane unleaded in mind because that's the "normal" fuel sold at petrol stations. So if it can use 95 without any problems, what do you gain from paying more for higher octane fuel? There's no efficiency savings, no power boost, just a lighter wallet.

Am I wrong?
high performance ecus have a map for 97, it allows aggressive ignition timing for more power.

This is a very interesting PDF on how Tesco 99 effected mpg, torque and bhp on a variety of cars tested.

interesting read and considering i own a 1.6 Zafira i might give the momentum 99 a shot an extra 230 odd miles over 3 tanks is quite a lot comparative to the extra cost of the fuel the momentum would actually work out cheaper in the long run if you did get those extra miles per tank the report claims...

Hmm... I've been tracking my fuel consumption using fuel-log and have notied that some fuel gives me a big discrepancy in fuel consumption reported by the car vs Calculated. Tescos RON95 is consistently an offender, to the tune of about a 10% hit compared to name brand fuels and some of the other supermarkets.

Wondering if Momentum is being made to look good because the standard stuff is dreadful? Shame they didn't include some other brands.

This is the exact report we've discussed in this very thread!!

There is no point using 99RON fuel in a 1.6 Zafira.

I once filled up with Shell V Power, felt no different to normal Shell fuel. I'm pretty sure for most users out there with an average "hot hatch" will just get a placebo affect from using V Power.

And all those that are quoting what there fuel cap says. If this were the case then I would HAVE to fill up using BP. Cos BP sponsor Ford in the rally team innit ;)

Shell all day for me, maybe if I religiously filled with V Power all the time I might see that the car runs slightly smoother, and the throttle response is a little better. But nothing to brag about really, and it won't mean your "hot hatch" is going to be super wikkid innit brap brap.

(to those with high end cars with tunes etc.. then higher octane fuel is good)

High Octane fuel in a 1.6 Zafira **where's my fail blog...
