'Gay' as a derogatory term, acceptable or not?

The word 'faggot' is simply insulting and is unacceptable.....unless you are refering directly toward the meatballs or a tied bundle of kindling (the latter is where the derogatory term for a homosexual man is thought to originally derive)

As for the different uses and definitions of words in common usage, these things go in cycles and the next generation will have another favourite term for 'pants' so it isn't anything to get all stressed out about.

As the title really. Do you think that it is acceptable to use the word 'gay', 'faggot' or the such as a derogatory term in conjunction with the actions of someone or a description of something?

I think it's totally unacceptable, extremely childish and rather pathetic. It not only shows your ignorance, but also displays a total lack of knowledge of the English language and I question the intelligence of those who feel the need to use it.

It's a slur that ought to remain in the playground, and shouldn't be perpetuated.

Thoughts?

I disagree to an extent.

I think it's the natural evolution of words. 'Gay' used to mean happy, it didn't always mean homosexual.

Is it derogatory to call something lame? And by using that word, are you automatically insulting people who can't walk? If something is 'wicked', you're not exactly condemning that thing to the dark depths of hell are you? If someone is 'dumb', that's not derogatory either, even though the word used to mean someone who was unable to speak.

Even the N word has been adopted by black people as a word to describe each other. It has connotations from the slave trade, but in today's context it doesn't refer to that at all.

Though you may not agree with it, it's the natural evolution of words taking place.

However, I do agree with you that when it's used by morons it becomes a problem. Because using the word 'gay' in this sense can influence their views on people who are homosexual.

I don't think it's a particularly insulting term, but it makes the people using it sound utterly, utterly stupid.

'Wicked' is a good example of slang changing the meaning of a word to mean the opposite.....the word wicked means evil or bad.....yet in slang it means the polar opposite...good.

Absolutely it is :)

Thread is gay.

I call homosexuals that annoy me faggots all the time. Especially on public transport, when they get too close. I say move out the way faggot. :D

 You really are a waste of the 46 chromosomes aren't you.

On topic.

Society is evolving the word gay again but it does not escape the fact that the current evolution of the word as a weak insult is applied in reference to a negative view of homosexuality and for this reason I dislike it's use and make a concerted effort to not use it.

Stuff been sic in London for bare years bro....

(My sister teaches in an inner London school, gets bare slang updates for me)
