*****Official Star Wars: The Old Republic Thread*****

Lightning the mood a little.

...is it just me but doesn't some of the score sound more like Wrath of Kahn rather than Return of the Jedi.

I've been thinking this at times, mentioned it to my brother who is more into Star Trek than me but he insists no, glad I'm not the only one.

Hi there

I'm aware I'm receiving vouchers for the rain forest store from Santa and was considering purchasing this game, I do have a couple questions perhaps you guys could help me with please?

  1. Does this game (like WOW) require a monthly subscription charge?
  2. I've read issues where people have received serious queues while trying to connect to servers - is this really a big problem?

I've always been a big Star Wars fan and having recently played: Myth of Soma, Guild Wars and WOW I'm looking for something new to spend some time on. :)

thanks in advance guys :)

1. Yes ~£8-£10 depending on the sub length (1m,3m,6m etc)
2. Not so much any more, there are still a few very busy servers - but most are fine.

- server instancing as it take the first M out of MMO.
- lack of choice levelling. I say this as most other MMO's have a couple of zones for each level class on this there tends to be one and it can feel a little linear at times, especially on "city" maps like coruscant.
- lack of customisation of both your own character and companions, there are too many people looking the same, especailly companions, and a little customisation would be great in this regard.

All points that I can certainly see your point of view, even agree with it to some extent even if they don't necessarily bother me personally as much (but are certainly issues).

I guess the first two points are really double-edged swords and come down to how the game is built as some areas, particularly starting zones and places like Coruscant would be terrible to quest in without some level of instancing. At the same time it would be nice to see slightly more people around so maybe they've been to cautious and over done it, Alderaan and Tatooine could certainly hold more players I feel.

In terms of the linear order of planets this probably comes down to the story structure and wanting peoples own story to flow through locations where other content is so different classes end up together. I can see what you mean though, particularly after the capital worlds where for example on Imperial side you get told to go to Balmorra and Nar Shadaa but you must go to Balmorra really because NS is slightly higher level.

Character customization and the need for more options is something that each testing group I was in pointed out a lot. On the one hand it offers more than some mmo's but a lot less than others. Personally I'd like to see a weight/muscle slider rather than 4 body types and a lot more options for facial customization as that is the thing we see a lot of close up. I've not had a case of grouping for a quest and meeting my evil (or good?) twin yet, but I guess it will happen.

Anyway, hopefully people will feedback on this on the official forums and as with things like the UI they'll work on making it better (we can hope anyway).

Merry Xmas to you too.

Also getting Rainforest vouchers for Christmas, potentially interested in this game. However, I'm stuck on a dongle connection for the time being. How much data would I use up playing a couple of hours in a day for example?

Not much, 100 - 150mb per day roughly for a couple of hours.

I thought I would give some random Flashpoints a go (at the moment I have been doing them with the guild).

It started to go so well, then the tank just failed and was letting people hit the healer. I took them off the healer and then healer then started moaning at me for tanking. Both were from the same guild yet the tank wasn't doing anything about it. The tank had the inability to look around him and moaned when suggestions were given (I gave a few bits of advice :)) We ended up failing multiple times on some bosses due to certain people not moving/tank letting the other enemies hit the healer/other dps. It brought back some bad memories of WoW :(

I wish there was a way you could tag people so that it would remember comments/give positive feedback/negative feedback just so you knew what you were getting yourself into. Even if it was just feedback given by yourself so you knew not to group with them again.

Having a nightmare of a time making my char lol, am one of those people that wants their char to look good and have rerolled like 10 times because i keep changing my mind....this starter area is really getting boring now lol.

Well I'm enjoying this game so far. I'm currently a level 28 bounty hunter on legions of lettow.

Over the past 10 or so years, I've played SWG, guildwars, WOW, AoC, warhammer, EVE. I think SWTOR gives a very good middle ground between all of these games, but clearly its not for everyone.

I do think however this game puts the RPG back in MMORPG. I love the story, but I did play and love both of the KOTOR games.

This game does have issues, I won't try to argue its perfect, but no MMO at launch is. If you played AoC at launch you'll know what I mean ;). However I do feel Bioware are listening and learning at a fast rate. This might be due to their fear of ending up in the same situation Sony Online Entertainment got themselves in.

The one area i'm more disappointed with is my ship, the interior is so small. After being an ace pilot in SWG I lived on my ship.

Edit: oh and yes more character customisation options please.

I am on dark side, server "The Ravager". Don't think there are many OcUK'ers there but the server is all english speaking and I've joined a guild of guys who are nice and friendly.

To whoever said the above about the kiddies all being on light and not on dark - I was sure this would happen, hence I rolled Dark side :) Have had no immature people where I am so far, which is nice. Although I'm only lvl 21. Casual gaming ***!
