Hello everyone,
I am going to be attempting my first PC build after having laptops for several years.

Id like a good gaming pc and my budget is around £800.
Ive got together a list of things could you tell me if I should change any of it?

CPU : Intel i5 2500k < I would get the i7 2600k but Ive heard its not worth the extra money vs performance gains?

MoBo : Asus P8P67-M PRO REV 3 ... OR... Asus Maximus IV GENE-Z < Is this overkill?

GPU: Nvidia GTX 560ti PCI Express sounds like good value. And with the option of SLI in the future.

RAM : 4x4gb / 16 gig DDR3 1600mhz DIMM
< Possibly overkill , would 8 be better? if so 2x4gb or 4x2gb?

Sound Card : Creative Labs soundblaster Xfi PCI Express < I know not essential but for £35 gotta be worth it?

Case : HAF 922/CM Storm Sniper/Lancool K62?
< so many about Im really undecided . give me your thoughts?

PSU : XfX 750w or Cooler Master 700W < is this overkill?

DVD drve : Samsung 12x Blu-Ray ROM & DVD Writer Combo SH-B123L I deffo want to be able to watch Blu Ray discs :)

HDD : thinking of using a small SSD plus normal SATA maybe 500gb nothing massive. < ideas welcome

Thanks for reading! :)
And Merry Christmas!

Hey, welcome to the Oc' forums :)

I'd go 8gb of ram, as that is all that is really needed, and even that is overkill, but with the current pricing, you might as well :) - 2x4gb would be good. Like this set.

The Gene-Z can be had at a great price, but it is slightly overkill. Do you really have to have an mATX board though? I was thinking of this one. You can also get the Gen3 version of this at a good price atm too!

I'd stick with the i5, and the GPU! But, you won't really need a sound card as the on-board is really good now, and its not totally necessary.

For PSU and Case. I ain't too sure :p

looks gd
yer for gaming get the i5, i7 is mainly for hyperthreading etc
Motherboard would get a z68 board something like http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-191-MS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1990
would just get 8gb RAM instead of 16gb
Soundcard isnt needed as motherboard has built in sound output
case is rly about what you personally like
PSU both are gd and will support sli of the 560ti with the coolmaster u get £20 off with a cool master case (i think that deal is still running) i think the XFX psu is better quality
HDD ye gd idea to get a SSD aswell

Really struggling to get it down to £800 without making compromises.
With the 5% + free shipping discount this would come in at just over £825.
But I've had to pick cheaper options than ideal to get to that.
Also if you want to overclock past 4GHz you'll need an after market cooler, which will add even more to the budget. Gelid Tranquillo

thanks guys , greeeat help there.

will I need an adapter to fit the "XFX Pro 750W Core Edition '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply" to the "MSI Z68A-GD55-G3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard [Z68A-GD55 (B3)]" is it 8 pin?

Ok ill scrap the sound card then.

could anyone suggest a good monitor for 1080p gaming for under £200?

thanks again!

EDIT: Ok up my budget to £900 , I dont mind a bit extra if its worth the performance.

Also I see the OEM CPU is cheaper? what is the different between retail and OEM when it comes to a CPU?

1) No adapter required. Virtually all modern PSUs and mobos take 8-pin CPU power connectors.

2) Can't say for sure about the monitor, but there should be plenty of choices.

3) OEM : No stock fan, one year warranty. Retail : stock fan included, three year warranty.

The Bitfenix Shinobi doesn't have an exhaust fan included.

Can you spec a better cheaper case that does have one ?

(According to the spec it does have one, but on the pics it's fitted as an intake)

PSU is overkill for single card, but I would keep it for when you go SLI :)

From the OP
GPU: Nvidia GTX 560ti PCI Express sounds like good value. And with the option of SLI in the future.

ok so OEM and the Tranquillo fan sounds good then.

Ive seen a few different motherboards recommended there... which should I go for if I dont mind spending up to £140 on a MB ?

Regarding the sound card which would be far superior than onboard sound, so if you have a good speakers then its definatelly worth it.

Deffo list so far...

Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - OEM

XFX Pro 750W Core Edition '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply

Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 32MB Cache - OEM (ST31000524AS) [ST31000524AS]

I dont really need a 1TB HDD , can I save money there? 500gb perhaps?

EDIT: Ok just seen the 1TB on offer for same price as 500gb so Ill get the 1TB lol added to deffo list...

For the blu-ray drive, OEM means you won't get the fancy packaging. Saves a few quid. And I thought of that SSD, as even with the M4's new firmware, its faster for the write speed.
Oh, and case has further cooling option,s, but cases are all personal pref' :)
+ Its a 448Edition 560, practically a 570 with a TF3 cooler! :D

OEM blu-ray has no software, and there is no freeware options.
M4 SSD is miles faster at 4K read and right than any other drive, which is what actually matters.
560Ti 2GB is much better option if going SLi in the future, 448 edition is good if you're going to stick with 1 card, like overclocking and tinkering with it and arn't going to play at very high resolution :D

I'm looking at the 500R myself [future upgrade ;)]. Both that and the 400R are great cases. (just the 500 has a side panel fan). I currently own an R2, and its like a TANK! Great case also :)

edit: Slightly ignored the M4 stats :p - but at this weeks pricing, you might as well buy one!
For the GPU, the Vram problem is there, but my 1gb 560ti-tf(blah..) seems fine for me at 1080p, for now. There's a review here if anyone fancies reading today (probs not though :D)

I do like the HAF 912 , i know a lot of people think its ugly but I like it , Red LEDS too lol match my Cyborg V5 keyboard :) the 912 should be big enough for the GPU too?

regards to the Mobo , is the "Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3P Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard" worth the extra £30?
