Hey guys

Got a new TV today, Samsung 40" LED 3D TV (6 series 6350)

Absolutely love it, and as part of the deal, for £50, they threw in a surge protector as I didn't have one, and this £79 HDMI cable. I was skeptical at first, but was assured I could return the extra package if I didn't want it.

So I haven't opened it yet, and thinking I shouldn't bother. I've always believed with HDMI cables, and a digital signal, a £1 cable will be the same as a £100 cable. However, they claim because it's a 400hz TV, connecting it up to a Blu-ray/PS3 player means that to get the best picture/frame rate I needed this cable. It all sounded like rubbish to me but the guy seemed genuine unlike nearly every other sales person, actually knew his stuff or at least knew how to make it seem that way

So do I really need this cable? If it will make a difference, I'll keep it, as I wouldn't mind the surge protector anyway which was £80 on its own, but if I'm ok with my £10 cable, I'll return it and pocket the £50

Cheers guys

Does a 80 quid USB cable make your printer print better? ;)

Unless it's a long run you don't need it.

£50 for surge protector
£79 HDMI cable

Return them for a refund.

You can get a decent surge protector for under 20 notes and a HDMI cable for under a fiver.

return the cable and surge protector.

Just get any 1.4 compliant HDMI cable and the surge protector, I got a 10 way one for £15 last week and a rather nice HDMI cable for £8.99.

It'll be the same as a £5 cable but i like the colour and the material of the cable.

Google Duronic ST10B as the surge protector I got.

Basically I paid £23.98, more than half what you paid for the same thing.

Although you're right that the cable shouldn't make any difference, it's not a digital signal. People saying this annoys me, as they clearly don't actually understand the theory behind it and just go round spouting phrases like "digital signal" without actually knowing what they're saying. I'm guessing it's not just me that gets annoyed by it, but most people that work with signals like that.

The cable carries analogue, the same way digital TV is transmitted over the air as an analogue signal, not digital.

You paid £50 for a surge protector and a HDMI cable. What you do is, go back to the shop and ask for the £50 back and give them those two items back. Then you go online and buy a HDMI cable for £1.50 delivered, and a surge protector for about a lot less possibly even a tenner (dependant on features etc). You then remember the general rule of "never buy a cable from a shop" which is generally true because you tend to get ripped off.

Was this in a space object named store?

The surge protector I believe the op is referring to is a Monster one with line conditioning and other ******** supposedly in it.
I would take it back personally.

Ok :)

Cheers guys, like I thought. I shall return it tomorrow :) Did think that was a load of poo what he was saying.

It was an extra £50 on top of the price of the TV for a surge protector, the cable and 2 extra pairs of samsung 3D glasses

Which samsung glasses? Assuming it's the Samsung SSG-3500 those are about £20 each anyhow so an extra £10 for a surge protector/hdmi cable pretty decent anyway.

Tbh I haven't seen a 1.4 compliant hdmi for £1.50. (Wish i had). He does however need to get the cheapest 1.4 compliant (hi speed) hdmi he can get though ;)

Ebay, there's tons.

Tons? I did a search using 1.4 compliant hdmi and the cheapest that came up on a page that was supposed to reval 100 items ranged from £37- £5.27

edit: It was the wording and I stand corrected. If i'd have searched for hdmi 1.4 then prices would have ranged from £1.57. Thanks

I picked up a 3m HDMI 1.4 cable for around £4 works and looks great (tested with 3D bluray as well).. the cheaper cables work as well as the more costly onse... but then I've always lived by if you happy with what you paid dont look back.

£50 for all these items doesn't sound bad if each pair of glasses is £20 anyway i.e. £10 for both surge protector and hdi cable is reasonable. I'd only return if the TV itself is cheaper elsewhere.
