Is it worth spending money on gaming mice and keyboards?

I have a gaming mouse (Logitech G700) but a Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard. I do also have the Logitech G13 (Replaced the Belkin Nostromo on Christmas Day), so I guess I don't have a reason to have a gaming keyboard. :)

Best thing about a 'Gaming' keyboard is that a lot of them have backlit keys for playing at night. I use an x4 sidewinder keyboard and a mx518 mouse. Both work very well, apart from the pain is starting to come off the W,S,D keys. I am not so sure I could play that well with a £3 mouse tbh.

Been using a basic (no fancy buttons, 'office type') PS/2 viglen keyboard and logitech PS/2 two button + scroll wheel mouse for ages. Yes PS/2 not USB. Keep it simple. Been playing FPS games for as long as I can remember! From previous experience USB devices sometimes cause slow down, stuttering or stop working in Windows. PS/2 has never failed, only downside is PS/2 is not hotplugging, if you do, it could bork your motherboard if the pc is on when you unplug/plug PS/2 devices such as a mouse.

IMHO all these fancy 'gaming', 'laser' mice, DPI this, dpi that and posh keyboards are OTT and just not needed. Yes, I have tried them before and personally I didnt see any difference, if anything I found them too sensitive and had to lower the sensitivity in games. Just my 2 pence.

Is there any 'real world' difference, my opinion - no.

Depends how serious you are with your gaming.

For me, a decent gaming mouse is important but I just have a keyboard which I think "looks nice". IE a non gaming one.

Really depends on what you're doing with it. MMO players tend to like having specialised mice and keyboards with hundreds of macro keys on top of the standard set :p

For FPS/RTS gaming, mice tend to be quite important in comfort and accuracy. In my experience keyboards dont make a huge amount of difference. So long as you're comfortable with the keyboard you're using and can get around the keys you need quickly without having to look and second guess yourself all the time. I've been happy with standard dell keyboards before.

With the premium prices, Razer's not necessarily the best option at the moment but i'll happily throw in a recommendation for the deathadder. Amazing mouse, compared to the 'standard' mice i used to use and a couple other 'gaming mice' i've played with before :)

I have the MS X4 keyboard and a logtech G500. REally happy for gaming. Though the smooth keys on the x4 are starting to annoy me now that I am learning to code html and thus have lots of typing.

I've used standard keyboards/mice before to play games (UT99, 03, 04, 07, CoD4, 5, Americas Army) and I now have what I wouldn't call a gaming mice and keyboard but it's not the standard PC ones either.

I've got a Saitek (Cyborg?) Keyboard and I only got it because it has illuminated keys and the big enter key, plus it was on special offer.

Also have a Razer Salmosa (not really their top gaming ones) that I got for a good price when I needed a mouse. It has high dpi and frequency switches but I have it at 800dpi which is the same as my standard logitech mouse I used before that.

I do like the rubbery feel it has compared to standard mice, but I think that no hardware can make a crap gamer good. I used to play on a wide armrest sofa before I even got a desk with the standard mice and switching over to a razer mouse made no difference.

When I see threads on other forums of users buying these special WASD only keyboard add ons or mice with 8 buttons (that are significantly more expensive than normal peripherals) I just think gosh what a waste :D

I think it's always worth the money spent on a good monitor and mouse, they're the main thing you see and use so it's worth getting something that has quality. Keyboard it's less of an issue unless you're going mechanical just get something simple. The 'gaming' keyboards are mostly just overpriced with flashy lights and usb hubs/audio ports you will probably never need.

I already have a decent monitor.

Got a Razer Naga, even though I don't play MMO's I still love using this mouse!

I know how weird it sounds but it's actually easier to click !

A mouse makes a lot of difference - not only for gaming, but even for general browsing. The extra buttons make it a lot easier going back/forward, scrolling etc.

I have a G19 keyboard - not worth the investment (had 50% off at logitech store so it wasnt at full price).

If I were you, I'd get a half decent mouse (Logitech G400 maybe) and only get a keyboard if your current one isnt too ergonomic.

Any good ones for under £30? I'm unsure whether to get a gaming mouse (Razer Abysuss) and/ or an 360 controller for playing games. Bearing in mind I've been a console gamer for the past 8/9 years (Playstation 1/2/3). Tempted to get both to use with certain games i.e. mouse for FPS games and controller for games like saints row 3 or Skyrim. Not really keen on all the extra buttons as I don't play MMO's, but two extra won't hurt!. Thoughts?

A good keyboard and mouse is always worth investing in. In fact, I personally buy peripherals for specific tasks rather than opt for an 'all-in-one' solution. Some may say it's overkill but to be honest, I have suffered with so many aches and pains from not having an ideal mouse, keyboard etc. I am currently using a G13 gamepad for my gaming (takes a little getting used to and you have to have it positioned correctly but it does make a difference), a G15 keyboard (nice action, good features and backlit) and a Cyborg R.A.T. 5 mouse (adjustable, well balanced and well made). I considered all 3 on the basis of comfort and functionality. They work for me but may not work for others.

Trying them out in the store only gives you an indication of what it might be like and i'll bet you end up buying different types trying to find 'that' perfect one for you. Good luck.

dont buy the ******** ocuk are selling but a good keyboard will make your gaming experience a lot better (office keyboard). dont fall for the mouse trap either , find a mouse you like, get used to it .

g15 has to be the worst keyboard i ever bought, the best was a cheap(£30) cherry office keyboard i bought years ago. no macro **** but you dont need that tbh. when you pushed the key it threw a mine or grenade no questions asked.

For FPS gaming, a good mouse makes a massive difference. I got my 1st decent mouse 10+ years ago when I got a MS Intellimouse 3 for playing CS. I noticed an immediate improvement and with practice and the fact the mouse was very accurate my 'twitch' aim became very very good which is essential in most FPS multiplayer games.

I current use a Razer Death Adder.

I have never bought a gaming keyboard, mine is moderately ergonomical and I don't feel like I get RSI from it. Even though I got to 500 days played in wow over 5 years. It might be handy for extra macro buttons but I have never felt the need to invest in one.

But a good mouse is a must.

I'm currently using a Deathadder mouse + Boogiebug XL mat. It makes all the difference for me. Not just for gaming - browsing and work tasks are a lot smoother and more comfortable.

The difficulty is trying and picking one that suits you as there are very few high street stores that stock gaming mice. Maybe purple shirt store?

I think I chose mine after testing out some at an I-series LAN event many years ago (i21! :D )

Logitech G400 then!

And if people do buy a pretty good mouse, make sure you have a good mouse surface like the boogie bug otherwise you won't notice the difference then between a gaming mouse and a standard mouse.
