Yaris vs A1

We probably do 6,000 miles a year max, which is a mixture of London Roads, A roads and M25. My girlfriend just wrote off her Corsa, and now in a hunt for a new "supermini".

She's got her eyes on a Yaris T Spirit (which has good spec) and an Audi A1 Sport (which looks nicer, but not as good spec), both are a similiar price.

The dark horse, so to speak, was an A1 S Line Black which looked amazing, and nice spec too, but costs a couple of k more, and inside is not very spacious beyond the front seats.

Insurance wise, I was shocked that the S Line is only an extra £100 per year (!) even with the write off. Running costs seem fine, tyres are a bit costly (R18/225/35) but not the end of the world.

The Yaris is definately more spacious and practical I would say as a result, but nonetheless is mundane. The A1 is less roomier, but looks better, and the S Line Black has a very nice interior.

So..mundane...or more exciting, but less pracitical?

PS She only wants A1 or Yaris...I've tried showing her many cars but that's her choice :cool:
 
Sensible money would buy the Yaris.

The A1 is a far nicer place to be though.

Shame she is set on an A1. You get a Polo for a lot cheaper and is nigh on identical to the A1.

I know, I said that to her yesterday, women... :D

She's had a difficult time recently with her dad having a stroke whilst abroad and then a few days later crashing on the M25, so I am letting her have her way on this one.

I personally like the A1 too...she prefers the Yaris...

on the A1, Sport or pay the extra for a S Line?

As far as i can see Sport spec is

same as SE plus:
- sport seats
- lumbar support
- front fogs
- polished tailpipe
- mobile bluetooth prep w/ voice control
- 16" alloys
- sports suspension (basically stiffer springs)
- leather steering wheel + other fancy leather chrome interior bits
- driver info system w/ trip computer etc (looks pretty nifty)

S-line is the same as sport spec plus:

- black cloth/leather sports seats
- s-line logos everywhere
- s-line sport suspension
- s-line body kit + spoiler
- 17" alloys
- black clothe headlining (makes a big difference in these cars IMO)
- LED interior lights
- S-line door sills

The S-line spec is basically the sport with a lot of pretty bits on. Not essential but will make the car look/feel a lot nicer.

No idea on the price though. Just thumbed through the Audi brochure.

Definatly go for the sport spec as a minimum though. Telephone prep is pretty useful.

Shame that cruise control isn't standard in their.

Also unless she wants a derv the best engine (bar the 1.4 TFSI 185PS) is the 1.4 TFSI 122. Same engine without the supercharger but has the choice of manual and S tronic (DSG). Low CO2 and good MPG.

NathWrath, the 185 PS is the one I prefer, specifically http://www.audi.co.uk/new-cars/a1/a1/finance-and-offers/black-edition.html, but without tinted windows :P

We saw a A1 Sport last night, it was nice inside, but the S Line was nicer, especially the Black Edition.

She is test driving them today, then tomorrow we will decide. She is inbetween the A1 and Yaris at the moment, I am towards the A1. Any nuances she should look out for when testing them?

That engine is sweet. I have the same in my Cupra although with 180PS, Audi tune their's up by 5PS to be a cut above :P (and probably to counter the extra weight lol)

The 1.4TSI/TFSI 180/185PS does have issues with misfiring and high oil consumption. I have had my car in twice now to SEAT and I am not the only one. There are many threads on seatcupra.net briskod.net and various other VAG sites about them.

They offer excellent MPG and low tax, with plenty of power and torque but be wary that the engine could have issues. My car has done 2K miles from new fyi.

A good engine but can have it's issues, luckily you will have warranty. I just hope Audi dealers are better than SEAT ones for service!

You're right, but I guess we're looking at it do we want a high specced but mundane car, or a lesser specced but less mundane car, or a high specced but more expensive, but even less mundane car.

I am just trying to convince her to get the A1 SLine Black :P

Ah right, definately interesting to know, will research into it thanks.

Minstadave, someone swung across into the lane she was in on the M25 2 cars ahead, car ahead slammed anchors, she didn't react in time. Her only accident in 9 years of motoring. her dad suffered a stroke a few days before which I am certain was the main factor from her side, given she is a very careful driver.
