The only SF I've read properly is Douglas Adams' amazing The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. Obviously, it was excellent!

In no particular order ...

David Weber (Harrington books, etc)
Lois McMaster Bujold (Vorkosigan books)
Elizabeth Moon (Familias Regnant universe books, Planet Pirates series (with Anne McCaffrey).
Anne McCaffrey

For more classical science fiction I quite like E. E. "Doc" Smith.

Useful thread. I too love Iain Banks and am wondering what else is out there of a similar style. :) OP what are your favourite Iain M Banks out of interest?

Michael Swanwick. Stations of the Tide is excellent, and I`ve just read the short stories "The dog said bow-wow"

I must renew my subscription to Interzone, if you like short stories this is out bimonthly.

My favourite Hamilton series was the Nights Dawn Trilogy. One thing that annoyed me about his books though was the style of writing, everything seems a bit rushed. He tells good stories but not as well as Banks. I'd have a look at the Hyperion books by Dan Simmons as well.

I have read all of Arrhur C Clark and Herbert.

Favourite Banks? I probably think the most recent one - Surface Detail - was the best. The imagination for the virtual Hell was breathtaking. However I am just reading Excession again, also very good.

I am a big fan of Peter f Hamilton and have read all his books, consider Alastair Reynolds and no one has said Richard Morgans (only the sci fi ones, start with altered carbon)

Also try reading some of the books from rob grant (yes one of the red dwarf guys).
