Oh mr purple, is that why my laptop is broke?

even though I know next to nothing about computers

Don't give me that Capodecina punk !

It wouldn't surprise me if they don't make it out of 2012 in their current form. They're snipping costs wherever they can while spunking money on rebrandings in an effort to catch punters not aware of the new names.

... which is exactly the same thing they've been doing for the past 3 years with zero results to speak of.

They are too big to be wiped out by taking a loss this year and can probably survive a hefty loss in 2012 too but it will force them to do some fairly large restructuring... and yeah its not uncommon for these kinda companies go through the whole "reinventing"/"rebranding" themselves exercise when it hits the fan like this (lots of big ideals that don't transfer over to the realworld) and it never accomplishes anything other than throwing away money they could be putting to better use.

I was in the queue the other day at the purple shirt store, over hearing a conversation and its times like those that Im so thankful I have an IT experienced head on my shoulders. In a nutshell it was a purple shirt salesman selling a new PC to a punter who basically used a computer for internet, email and itunes. Its amazing how most questions the punter was asking about the computer and its capabilities received answers from the salesman that all related to more money. For example, "can this one play videos?", "yes of course, but maybe you would like to look at this one over here that has a bluray disk drive, a nicer screen and a larger hard drive to store all your videos"

Now, I may be wrong and my limited knowledge of the whole conversation could mean the punter was actually into video editing and did infact need a better system to edit and store videos. In my humble opinion, I dont think he was that person and he probably meant youtube videos or DVD's etc, who knows. But I got the distinct impression the punter was probably paying way more on a pc than he had to. Maybe he can, maybe he was quite well off financially and it made no odds but its still apparent to me how people are sold powerful pc's when a bog standard one will do just fine for that persons needs.

Salesman selling stuff shock horror

Im quite sure 99.9% of all salesmen in the world do this.

I personally know nothing about cars, and im sure a salesman could try and sell me 1000s of pounds of extra options.

I dont think they sell powerful PC's, they over price and sell mid range ones and claim they are top spec. I guess there is a posibility of making more loss if they get in top spec.

Random question, if you were standing there minding your own business and can hear someone that doesn't know a thing about computers ext getting ripped off. Would you tell them?

Probably. I don't like seeing other people get taken advantage of so easily.

On my first trip there a bloke came in and said have you got one of these? It was a laptop power adaptor. Can be hand for under 20 on eBay and various other sites. 70 pounds was the reply from mr purple. I mean come on, they are con men.

going online without anti virus. This can cause you too lose 2gb of ram. All his friends agreed.

Because everyone knows that lol

Seriously though, Mr Purple might sell PC's but 99% of the people that work there probably have no idea whats inside those boxes lol.

I had to explain what Thermal Paste was to one of them lol

The only stuff I ever buy from there is external hard drives, or the occasional game and even they can be a rip off

Last time I was in that place(with a friends Acer actually) I got fobbed off by some guy without a clue. i simply asked him to get someone who knew what they were talking about. He looked ****** off understandably. To which I told him he'd just spent 10 minutes talking crap to a computer technician.

Never bought anything from the 'purple shirts' since they tried to palm off a MX440 as a Ti4600 and then had me escorted from the store for arguing the point with them. Idiots, the lot of 'em!

Yes, if I was certain they were being mislead.

Every time I go into a major high street electrical retailer I secretly hope that one of their salesmen is trying to flog someone a ridiculously overpriced HDMI cable just so that I can intervene. Is that sad?

Friend of mine quite working at the purple world due to not being able to stomach being actually trained to lie to people. How they are allowed to continue trading is entirely beyond me. They are basically badly tarmacking driveways and stealing old women's purses. Except with computers!

I actually convinced a couple to let me build their computer for them rather than letting the purple place sell them an overpriced one, obviously they shopped around a bit, found a spec they liked and I managed to save them a few bills.

BTW, they weren't total strangers, they were friends of the family

My parents went into a spicy high street electronics store to buy a tv, the bloke said thwy didn't want to buy a 1080p 40" toshiba LED cause it uses too much power and that a 51" 720p samsung plasma would be better because it was more efficient. Then tried to flog em a £30 hdmi cable when they have nothing to plug into hdmi, a surge protector and a stand that was only rated to carry a 47" tv.
