Steam Christmas Sale 2011

I was new to Magic so just got the base game and enjoyed it.

I think if your hardcore into CCG's then not being able to create a complete custom deck might put people off.

Well I wouldnt say Im into CCGs "hardcore" but I would like to be able to customise a deck. Bit of a let down you cant fully customise them, but then are the decks balanced? Could be fun I guess.

"So you'll collect cards and build decks to use against other players?

Not exactly. Like it's predecessor, Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 doesn't feature full-on deck building or card collecting. Instead, as you play through the single player campaign, you'll unlock new preconstructed decks to play with, and by winning games using the decks, you unlock new cards to add to them (the new cards are specific to the deck you used). The developers have given two reasons for the lack of this feature: 1) Wizards of the Coast doesn't want DotP to directly compete with Magic the Gathering Online card sales, and 2) The preconstructed deck setup makes the game more accessible to newer and more casual players.

So I can't edit my deck at all?

As you play and win with a deck, you'll unlock new cards which you can choose to add (or not) to the deck, typically making it more powerful and interesting to play as and against. However, unlike the first DotP, in DotP 2012, you will be able to remove cards from your core deck after unlocking some new ones, rather than only being able to remove unlocked cards. This allows for much more deck customization and optimization, but still prevents any deck build from becoming overpowered and overplayed.

I can't build my own deck? That's pants! Will they add the option in DLC?

No. The lack of deck construction was a very deliberate choice and it's not one that's going to be implemented in a patch or in DLC. Anyone who spent a good deal of time with Duels of the Planeswalkers will probably tell you, however, that it isn't such a big deal in the long run. Playing with preconstructed decks allows the developers to ensure that everything is balanced and no deck or deck theme becomes totally overpowered. Even the first game's elf and vampire decks, both regarded as ridiculously strong when they were released, eventually became trivial to counter once you knew the cards in the decks well enough. It also lightens the game's atmosphere and makes it a much more fun game to play in a social setting. You'll rarely want to chop your friend's testicles off and shove them violently down their throat, something I can't say is true from my experiences with paper Magic.

Okay, fine. So what kinds of decks CAN I use?

Duels of the Planeswalkers decks are all themed and (loosely) based on the personalities of the planeswalker they represent. The decks confirmed for DotP 2012 so far are:
* Kiora Atau's unnamed blue/green deck
* Warriors of the Woods (green/black)
* Strength of Stone (red)
* Unquenchable Fire (red)"

Might buy C&C4 I know everyone slates it, but for £3.74 may as well take the punt, £3.74 is nothing.

Trust me, it's not worth even that. RA3 barely justifies it's price, it's not good at all.

C&C3 was better, but still not a patch on the earlier stuff.

Nice write up there, sums it up pretty much.

Just to add, I give MTG 2012 the thumbs up coming from the actual MTG card game when it was initially launched and stuck with it for @5-6 years.

Pro: Lovely graphics, zooming the cards up close and one can admire the artwork on the cards, UI is easy to understand and easy to use, excellent variations of MTG game modes (1vs1, 1vs1vs1, 1vs1vs1vs1, 2vs2 plus the excellent Archmage mode (3vs1), all game modes can be played online and its easy and quick to find online games and join them. Good selection of decks and due to the nature of limited deck mixing, the balance between decks is pretty good so no one decks masters all but it is easy to have your own personal favorites setups. Due to both a good variation of decks currently available and the various game modes, you will often find yourself locked into some excellent battles (which IMO are rounds that go beyond @25 turns)

Cons: Few, land cards gets automatically added depending on how many cards you have (I think it about 20% land cards) you cannot manually change that. Would have liked to see a score/statistic table of all the games you played including the AI games.

My biggest gripe: You cannot manually TAP your land while you play your cards which can occasionally be a right pain! However, you can avoid most instances of that once you get to know it well.

On the DLC: I would HIGHLY recommend you DO NOT buy the Foil decks or conversions, as I am told the foil decks simply give your card look a shiny graphical effect on them, that's it! And the conversions is unlocking all the locked decks which ruins your own gameplay cause it is good fun trying to win games in order to unlock each deck (20 unlocks per deck) but all the other DLC like the expensions decks are worth it if you get the feel for the game.

My 2cs.

MTG 2012 looks interesting played a card game like this on my ipad was fun game think give this a try not sure what extra packs to get might get them all if its cheap enough.
Looking at getting deck pack 1 an 2 plus The Gathering 2012 - Expansion £7.16 total this will give me plenty of extra decks bit confused with other choices think just unlocks an foils.

This is why I don't pay much for these indie games. Been trying to get this super meatboy to work all day, first it was coming up with server error and now I get loss of sound and ctd.

22 steam achievements done:

3 Coal (Had another 2x7 but converted them)
2010 Basketball manager (Worth 89p in the sale)
-50% any Valve
-50% off Duke Nuken Forever
-50% off Wings of Prey
-10% off any Deep Silver (Dead Island, risen, etc)
-50% off Greed Corps
-50% off Dungeon Defenders
-50% off Binding of Isaac

What a total waste of time. Every single one of those coupons is totally useless as the games are either have bigger discounts in the general sale or have had a much higher discount on the daily deals. The -10% deep silver one is a total joke.

I MUCH preferred the system from the summer camp sale where we could trade tokens in for cheap DLC or little in game things. This sale has been a let down in the give-away and in the daily deals.
