Heaven and Hell

No and no, when you die you die. It's fairly simple. Once again, heaven is another religious concept used to give people false hope and to indoctrinate them. However, considering you won't know that you won't go to heaven when you die, I don't suppose it really matters.

To stop people killing themselves because they have nothing to live for, simple.

If God was proved to be non-existant, we'd all become criminals

I'm not a criminal but to my mind the non-existence of god is proven. And why would there be nothing to live for?!?!? I'm on this planet for ~80 years, what do you think I'll be doing for all that time? Ridiculous.

So why do churches still exist?

The problem is, like the afterlife we cannot prove or disprove it.

If we could prove it then wouldn't everyone just be raping and stealing because they wouldn't be afraid of going to Hell?

You don't need to be religious to be a good person. I am not religious in the slightest, in fact I find religion highly amusing, however I have never stolen from, or raped anyone. Apart from that one time.

I don't steal etc. because I am not a dick, not because I am afraid of some nonsensical fallacy about a, quite frankly ridiculous, afterlife.

No, because the majority of people, in the UK at least, don't think that hell exists and consequently why would they be concerned about it?! I don't not commit crimes because I'm worried I'll go to hell, I happen to have a conscience and moreover don't need to commit crimes so why would I bother??

Churches still exist because, firstly, they are excellent examples of beautiful architecture, and secondly because, for reasons that I cannot fathom, people still believe in god.

Your indoctrination is blinding and extreme.

lol i await for Vonhelmet&castiel to start turning the thumb screws, thats when it will get interesting:)

I'm more concerned about the lack of capitalisation of my moniker rather than the eternal souls of disbelievers.....;)

Besides there is no Hell in the literal sense if most interpretations of Judeo-Christian theology is to be believed....it is a state of self determined separation from God, not eternal punishment...of course if you are a Christian they would be one and the same.

Others, including Judaism and many of the Millenarian denominations of Christianity believe is merely refers to the common Grave where souls await judgement....

Yet others, such as Universalism ascribe to a variation Jewish interpretation with the exception that their is no eternal punishment at all.

Gehenna is the place in Judeo-Christian theology that was the ultimate destination of those who were judged by their own actions and words as unrepentant and were subjected to a maximum of one year of atonement for those actions (there are five exceptions who reside for eternity).....because of the KJV translation error of making Gehenna, Hades and Sheol the same word, this has become synomomous with our modern renaissance art and media driven idea of what Hell is, when really it is more akin to Purgatory.

Most other modern translations have rectified this. However like most things theological it is entirely down to interpretation and the mindset of the individual as to what they believe, but most of the Mainstream Churches have no definitive doctrine on the nature of Hell or definitive official teaching therein.

Personally I think that it is something to worry about if and when you arrive....the essence of Free Will means that if there is a God and we have a Soul then by simple acquience to him and acceptance and repentance of whatever acts may have been considered sinful then by his very nature this constitutes forgiveness and redemption......and while I am an unbeliever...if I stood before God in judgement then you can remove the 'un'...and as Gehenna in Christology is reserved only for those who by choice turn away from God in death, if at the end of my life the Big Man is stood before me...I'm a believer.....:p

Where did you pick up the use of moniker can I ask, if you can remember?

/suspicious look

What the word 'moniker' or my username.....

'moniker' is just a word I use on occasion....my username derives from the Angel in the TV show Supernatural, whom my wife seems to think I resemble, not in apparance per se, but my implacable nature....

Basically the wife choose it.
