EVO 166 Collectors' Edition - Feb 2012

The right tyre can transform a car's handling, ride quality and safety, but which rubber should you fit to your car? John Barker puts ten tyres to the test to help you decide

All tyres were 235/40/18 92Y XL - Tested on an Audi S3

Results:

  • 1st Continental ContiSportContact 3
  • 2nd Hankook Ventus S1 Evo
  • 3rd Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric 2
  • 4th Michelin Pilot Sport 3
  • 5th Pirelli P Zero
  • 6th Bridgestone Potenza S001
  • 7th Dunlop SP Sport MAXX GT
  • 8th Vredestein Ultrac Cento
  • 9th Kumho Ecsta KU39 LE Sport
  • 10th Accelera PHI

Why didn't they test the Conti CSC5??? Apart from that it seems there was little to choose between the top 3. Personally I would still go for the Goodyear Eagle F1 Assy 2 as the best overall tyre.

If they tested 100 tyres, the top ten would have some meaning, but they don't so it is as meaningless as ever.

It only tests for a given size and fitment anyway, and performance can vary on different cars.

Is there any more detail which would shed a light on the differences between F1A2 and CS3? As I'm literally about to order some tyres probably next week this sounds like it might be worth a read.

My previous view was that the increased levels of performance F1A2 offered was enough to justify fitting them to the rear whilst leaving my CS3's on the front. Now I'm not so sure I shouldnt just plump for more CS3's on the back.

CS3 wins again!? Above the F1A2!?

Test in my front size as well. Hmmm.

I have CS3s fitted all round on mine. I can only compare them to Eagle F1 Assyms (as I haven't had Assym 2s on there yet). But overall I would actually rate Assym 1s above the CS3s (longer lasting, similar grip levels in the dry, Eagle F1 better in the rain).

The GEF1A2 has few weaknesses. It is outstanding in the dry, recording the highest lateral G and shortest braking distance, and also very good in the rain, with near-table-topping performance around the wet lap. And all this with a remarkably low rolling resistance. It was highly rated subjectively, too, in all conditions, and loses out to the top two by only a very small margin. A very good tyre

That pretty much mirrors my thoughts. The only noticeable improvement from the CS3 is rolling resistence - 5% more fuel economy from the CS3 over the AS1.

The mismatch thing is the thing stopping AS2 being a no-brainer.

If you want my opinion which you probably don't. Theres next to f-all difference between the AS2 and CS3 in normal driving. Theres not even any noticeable difference in wear to be worth mentioning.

The S1 Evo appears to have done even better than the V12 did last time - can't find them in my size anywhere though, even though the Hankook site lists 205/45/16 :/

I've got F1 2s on the front and I'm very pleased with them.
Probably get them on the rears when the time comes, but I'm enjoying getting the back out too much to change them just yet :)

Once again they omit one of the most credible alternatives the sessanta ultrac, a Tyre which has stood the test of time with no design change in 5 years. So, in other words, a pretty pointless test.

No design change in 5 years pretty much sums up why nobody bothers testing it anymore. It's pretty old now - heck it was a GS-D3 rival back in the day!

You only feel its 'the most credible' because they are cheap.
